They have received a letter from the government guaranting payment. Anyone dealt with the Saudi government before? What can I expect? |

I've worked with Saudi students on Saudi government-sponsored programs in both Canada and Europe.
In what respect do you want advice?
You mention gov't level...well, in my experience the students normally do (mostly) arrive. Payments are made. However, timing and deadlines can vary wildly, as can student numbers. There has been less scrutiny of success levels than in programs we run for Westerners - though very strong expectations that each student WILL succeed.
The students are, well, sometimes off the scale compared to those we're more used to in these regions. That's for another post, though, if you're interested. |

It strikes me as one of the paradoxes of Saudi Arabia that Saudis are great travellers but at the same time innocent of even the most basic geographical knowledge. |

I was surprised to find that some of ours had never heard of the jet stream and were baffled why it takes longer to fly west than east. |

I agree that Saudi students' lack of basic geographical knowledge can be shocking.
In fairness, though, I've lost count of the number of times people back home have asked me what part of Saudi Arabia Dubai is in. |

Well, you have to check that your school/university is listed in the 'approved or recommended list' of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Magic Kingdom. If not, probably the Ministry will not pay the fees for those students who do not follow the Ministry's instructions in this regard.
Also, the Ministry has stopped to send students to some universities in USA, canada, UK, Australia, Egypt, Jordan, because the number of Saudi students in those universities has reached the max allowed by the Ministry!
Check this: http://www.mohe.gov.sa/ar/Pages/default.aspx
Also, read this:
"Ministry Deputy for Scholarship Affairs Dr. Abdullah Al Mosa denied that ministry has contracted with an Irish language institute, as published in local newspapers sourcing claims of some Irish newspapers. The claim that 750 students are going to study English at Mansfield Groups' City West institute is far from real, Dr. Al Mosa said.
Dr. Al Mosa noted that the mentioned institute is not recommended by the ministry and never was contracted. He added that coordination efforts with cultural missions at host countries are made prior to students travel abroad. These cultural missions care about selecting respected educational institutions and recommend them to equip students with language needs to continue their university careers."
