I don't think there is an EFL job that pays as well as an international school when you look at comparing the two packages.
The HK NET program comes close.
I currently make about $40k US after taxes, and my international school pays a hell of lot less than most if you include the whole package. I figure my next contract I should be able to make 40-50k US and get free housing and other perks like airfare for my family that my current school doesn't provide.
I will say, stay away from Europe. The taxes in Europe are killer and 90% of the schools don't provide you free housing. Becareful of the ME, as many of their "international schools" are really glorified private schools with 100% local students.
Check out Search Associates, internationalschoolreview.com, and ISS for more info on international schools.
Good luck. |

I have to say that I think I found my dream job. It's at a uni. I work 12.5 hours a week, get 50 bucks an hour for OT and have 20 weeks paid vacation. Benefits as well, no flight, but an extra month pay, which will be worth about 5x my flight. Have very low taxes. By working an extra 2.5 hours a week, I'll be pulling in 3K a month and get 13 months' pay. Which comes out to about 39K a year. If I can do some editing or proof reading for the uni, thath's extra cash as well.
DOn't forget that money isn't everything. One of the reasons I took this job was because of the low hours and long vacations.
ANd don't forget that all international schools aren't all alike. I was getting 1500 usd at mine and the bonus wasn't even half an extra month's pay. ONly about 8 weeks vacation becuase of planning and stuff and I had 31 hours a week of teaching. ANd I don't even want to talk about the stress of planning and working without books, a syllabus, scope and sequence, nothing.
So in my case, teaching at a uni is MUCH better than an intl school
I really think that money is to be had in
teaching young learners
teaching business English
international schools
Universities
Director of Studies. |

Please don't hit me with things about "it's not about the money" etc etc. I'm a good teacher interested in travelling. It's just that I need to earn at least as much as I currently do.
I'm a seventh year high school English and History teacher. I have a BA and BEd. I've done a little Deputy Principal relief. However, I'd prefer to be in the classroom.
I teach in Queensland Australia and earn 56 674 AUD a year. I also get very cheap housing as part of the bargain.
Am I going to find something similar, or better, overseas?

I am guessing that he pays about 40 percent of that in taxes. He probably only has 34,000 AUD to spend a year. |

For comparisons sake one can earn 2.5 million Won a month with a 13th month bonus in Korea with just a B.A. in anything. You could almost earn 34,000 AUD as a low level children's English teacher in South Korea. Not to mention that you will get a free apartment.
You can also try for a public school job in Korea but the NET scheme in Hong Kong would be a lot better. |

Naturegirl321: I assume that's a Korean uni you are talking about? Some of those jobs are sweet if you find the right one, for sure. Do you have a masters in TEFL/TESOL? |

I have an MA in TEFL. BUt not in hand. I finished my thesis in March 2009. It was graded in May 2009. My degree closed in June 2009. I should get my degree in June 2010.
Yes, a year. A year to get my degree. Ugh. You get what you pay for right? It was a Spanish uni. My consoldation is that the king of Spain himself will sign it. . . so that's something. |

The Japanese uni jobs would pay better, but you would need a Master's and for many (recently anyway) decent Japanese language skills.
I noticed at the exchange rate he calculated, the OP makes about 4.5 million yen a year/37k Euro. I make quite a bit more than that , and the tax rate in Japan sits at about 25% or so for my income range.. I also take off quite a bit of time, though I work another job during my uni breaks (about 4.5 months a year) to make more money.
Of course, on the down side, it took me a while to reach that level of income, though getting into some of the international school here, he probably could earn more than he makes back in Oz (depends on the school). |

Why does it take a year for them to print and sign a degree certificate? Even if it is the King of Spain, seems a bit of a long wait....
Also, gaijinalways: Even though the money seems really excellent for Japanese jobs, I have been given the impression, from the adverts I've browsed, that they expect a PhD/EdD and 3 published articles as minimum. That's been the standard for most of the Japanese uni jobs I've seen, or have I just been looking at too many of their equivalent ivy league/oxbridge unis? |

They are getting pickier about who they want as there are more and more qualified people already here and fewer good posts (pay, etc.) to apply for. But there are jobs available that still don't ask for a PhD, though the publications, even for part-timers, is becoming a regular requirement. |

Welcome to my world. It's something like a semester for the uni to get around printing it. A semester for the king of Spain, and the summer to push paper. |
