| beware of going to north china . the dust blowing across from the Gobi desert makes life unbearable .painful for the eyes, the grit . i was in Shenyang and theres a massive tree planting scheme underway because ALL the city trees have died from drought. no birds or wildlife. |
I guess Shenyang's changed a great deal since I left in November 2008. I never got grit in my eyes and I spent a lot of time on my bicycle. Sure there was dust. You could write your name on any uncleaned flat surface after a couple of days. I do remember a lot of wind.
I remember a massive tree planting campaign but not dead trees. Since I first arrived in early 2003 I've seen a noticable lowering of pollution. Yes it's still polluted but then, all of China is.
Shenyang has one of the two remaining imperial palaces in China. It also has many parks, some of them impressive. There's lots of noisy night clubs and five star hotels if that's what you want. There's also pleasant ex-pat bars that cater to foreign teachers. Restaurants like much of China offer a wide variety of food - both in price and in type.
The people in Shenyang are friendly. It's not a major tourist destination so the industry of separating foreigners from their money is in it's infancy.
The people are honest. In years of taking taxis, I only had two unpleasant experiences. Both times I believe the driver didn't know where he was going and wouldn't admit it. For much of this time my directions to taxi drivers consisted of handing over a business card of the establishment I wished to visit.
Obviously, I love Shenyang. |
outside the city is a fantastic botanical gardens, built in 2008 . it has a giant tower made of green glass called "lily tower "
however the drought has killed everything in the park ,its a weird place to visit .this spectacular 2 yr. old tower is also closed to the public now and broken inside (i looked through its windows). but i too found the people of Shenyang very friendly ,felt safe in taxis and the like. i tried with no luck to buy a facemask in the time i was there ,as every single woman was wearing one to ward off dust .strange thing was ,no men wore masks . |

I have just returned to China recently. I was previously in Harbin and did like the city. Too cold in winter though. The ice festival is well worth wrapping up for.
I recently had a few days in Chongqing and because of the smog did not see the sun once, very dirty and polluted.
My favourite city in China is definitely Chengdu, so much to see and do. |

| I spent more than a year in Changzhou which is near Shanghai and about 5 million. It is growing fast. I loved it there!. More and more foreigners are living there from Europe and USA. The Chinese people are friendly and helpful I think. Shopping, restaurants, bars and night clubs are really good. If you are a single guy, beautiful women too! Look at it. I may go back. I have also been to Wuxi and Suzhou. Great cities near Shanghai! |
