When I first came to Oman, I was told by the Assistant Director staff that I would be "watched" and this implied that someone locally would be keeping an eye on me and my actions. |
It may have been a totally innocent warning of the fact that in the culture, reminiscent of the past in small town America, there is always someone watching. Of course, as foreigners, we stand out anyway. It might have just been a warning to take care how you act in public since the 'rules' are different.
Or he could have been a control freak who was trying to make you paranoid. I'd suspect the first though...

I think you are right VS. Just wondered about the scrutiny though. I've never minded being observed as I have faith in my appropriateness. |

I don't mind adjusting my behavior in public when I am living abroad, but scrutiny of my private life is not appreciated. I wish I had something exciting to need to be discreet about, but none the less, what I do in private and on my own time is my business.
I am a big believer in privacy. I absolutely mind being "observed", if it is not in a transparent and fair situation at work.
Small town America is a good example of the problem of being "observed"- often a bunch of small minded people, bored, and making problems for anyone having an interesting life. |

Helionzap,
The "majlis meets" are most likely some expatriate's paranoid fantasy. There is certainly nothing like a "town meeting" with a scheduled timne to discuss the personal behaviour of the local teachers.
What is a more realistic picture is that a name comes uop uin the course of a majlis conversation, and an opinion is given. If that person is known to be trying to do a good job, or has made a favourable impression, then that will be acknowledged.
By contrast, someone who whines at the secretaries, or is a notorious hypochondriac, will also be noted. As it is everywhere else. |

That makes sense. Not a whole lot going on out here in the mountainous areas so any topic for comment is of interest. Bad behaviour, certainly. I am happy to get that "town meeting" image out of my head though:-) Our next item on the agenda will be........ |
