I was being facetious.
I'm aware that the world is not an ideal place. Even though I'm a white skin person, I'm also a woman, and aware that hiring a man can sometimes be a safer bet, even though you'll probably pay him more for the same work. Fortunately not often the case in education. (Off the race issue).
This thread did get me thinking though - I hate to admit that if I was a DOS, and a rational, level-headed one at that, I'd hire a 32 year old man over a 32 year old woman any day. No chance of them needing maternity leave or days off for sick kids.
We may all cry injustice! but in the end, it comes down to whatever suits us best.
So, any thoughts on the sexist angle? |

JG:
Q. "What does anything of this have to do with teaching in China?"
A. Did you read the last sentence of my post?
Addendum: If I found your post worthy of serious discussion, I'd give you a lengthy post with point-by-point rebuttal. I don't. But have heart. There's life beyond the classroom. In time it might dawn on you that Denial, my Noble Upholder of Black Rights, Because, As You Truly Feel In Your Heart, They're Incapable Of Anything Absent Your Munificence, is a bit more than that storied river in Egypt.
Yes, I've found many kindred spirits in China. I have profound admiration for many Chinese. For Asians in general. They're great people. Laboring, as they do, even without your Noble Intentions.
Hey, is this a great place to Flog My Negative Views, or what?
Cheers,
Ever-Noble, Ever Well-Intended, Always-Filled (By The Quart In Every Vein) Of-Human-Kindness, Extoere |

Dear Ex. I am not sure what your posts contribute to this discussion except for one thing...a startling inability to comprehend the weight of the topic. You're obviously intelligent, yet fail to realize that the root of the problem lies in the injustice of you being able to micro-sect your roots, and then labling everyone of vaguely African extraction as "black".
Now I am aware that we all do it, but why do Chinese get mad if someone thinks they are Thai or Cambodian, Viet etc...??Should me just call them all "Almond Eyes"?? Why are you so particular in stating your heritage when the point would have been made just stating that "I am a genetic mixed bag of vagabonds and travellers"???
Dear Been There...
I don't know what you said to the guy, but try to let them know that you aren't black. The reasons for this request must be quite obvious.
Sincerely yours,
Krunch |

Reading your post regarding my previous posts, I was immediately struck by its probable relevance to this headline I read by one of our news services: " A Woman Missing Since 1990 Was Found ... Inside A Container At A Rental Storeage Unit."
Really, Cap'n Crunch, you should try to get out into the world more often! |

I trust you have no idea where I am or how much I am "out in the world". On this subject, "Black People in China", I am infinitely more qualified to judge relevance. Thank you for your time.

I have been in China for only 2 months.
Thus far I have met ESL teachers from, inter alia, Bulgaria, Kenya, Nigeria and Cameroon.
Their enunciation was poor and their inflections were often incorrect.

My experience as well, although some of them are my friends. But they will work for much less. Fuuny thing, the black from America with the same qualifications expects to be payed similar to me, but the Chinese schools are so used to the blacks from the African countries, and their heavy stereotypes where black in Hollywood movies speak atrocious english, some schools lump all blacks together.
I watched a Chinese version of Rush Hour, where someone had redubbed the black actor's engl;ish into a horrible caricature of every negative stereotype about black english |

50/50 the ad by "Allen" is a total troll. Has anyone actually seriously pretended to want this 3,000 job, about the lowest paying job for the hours that I have ever seen?
Do you really think the ad is real? |

Maybe you should use the search function Ex. I'm male.
On topic again. People need to realize that skin is just that,...skin. Your accent is a reflection of the region you grew up in. If English is actually a second language for you, then bravo...(the Africans I've met all have an accent but their speach is far easier to understand than most Chinglish teachers)
I have friends who are Russian, German, and French who are all Esl teachers in China.

PS. Thank you for once again displaying your wit with that poem. Now go back to guarding your cave ..SHE-TROLL!
PPS> Maybe a lot of the racism in this thread comes from fact that some people who would not be considered worth squat back home feel valued and desirable(in many ways) in the orient. Any notion that challenges their dillusions of superiority due to skin colour(which is how many caucasians in China are selected) unsettles them. What is merely bait for trolls, may be food for others thoughts. |
