Re the "blacklist", if it is the real deal, just go to Hong Kong, apply for jobs on the mainland and don't tell them you worked in China before!

see, this is what i was trying to bring up in another thread. it seems hard to believe that its that easy to get around a bad reference. im sure a new school could easily find out if youve had a Z visa and worked previously in china.

I was told that as of 2010, this blacklist was computerized so that it's more centralized. But like I said, it's all hear-say on my part

Contrive a means of being alone in the dean's office for a few minutes. Bring a couple of cooked prawns with you. Find odd places to conceal the prawns - down the back of heavy filing cabinets, inside the pole of a coat stand, behind a picture. I guarantee that after 4 days or so the smell will drive him insane.

It's been my experience that people who are "drunk with power" usually get their comeuppance eventually. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, although that's a fun suggestion, malu.

It is quite obvious this Dean is power hungry and wants to control FT's under her charge.

Definitely from the old school, back at least 30 years.

I would talk with other FTs if there are any. Definitely let her know
you cannot tolerate such abuse. Stop all social contacts initiated by her.
Let other friendly Chinese teachers know of your feelings, don't just
locked it all up within yourself.

Try and understand sometimes in life we end up working with dinasaurs
and she just happens to be yours. Life is a journey and she just happens
to be in your way. Handle it the best way you can without getting yourself a heart attack or give her the satisfaction that she got you over a barrel.

Look for another job without letting her know, if possible. Move into an
apartment outside her jourisdiction. Get your social support so that you
can endure the rest of the contract.

Stay cool. I know its easier said than done. Just like a bad mother-in-law. Make it a joke that she is trying to be your mother because she is
an empty-nester, or whatever.

My sympathies.

It's not a good idea to post hearsay in forums like this. Again, please read the article to which I posted a url.

To the OP: sort things out. Stay cool, and THINK OF YOURSELF. You are the only one with something to lose if things don't go your way.

Good luck.

It seems to me that one very obvious thing to do is to leave and then "loudly" complain here and on all the other big efl boards with the university's name and the Dean's name.

People like this always get employees and maybe someone will be fine with people strolling in and out of their apartment. But probably everyone who can use google will take a pass at this place in the future and they'll at least see the quality of their teachers go down.

I passed on about a dozen schools through the magic of google. You'd be helping others and yourself!

Might work to just tell any future potential employers about what happened. "I worked for this school, they did this, this and this; a clear violation of common courtesy and basic rights. I don't tolerate harassment."

I'd keep the names out of the forums. It's not good for the forum's reputation.

Here's a MUCH better solution:

Why should reporting the name of an institution hurt this forum's reputation???? I believe this and other teaching forums should be all about trying to filter through the crap to find the gold - without school names that job becomes very difficult!!!!!
However I do believe that readers should be wary, both with negative and positive over what's reported - but over the years I've been reading Dave's its always struck me that false reports - often written in second language English seem quite easy to spot - and are usually associated with an attempt to talk schools up in the hope of recruiting new teachers.

As for revealing names of teachers or other individuals - well that's a different kettle of fish!!!! If names were to be revealed here than we'd all be using our own instead of hiding behind a forum moniker - however if there are employers/recruiters who are really exploiting, mistreating their FT's - then I could also think of a good few arguments why these names should also be revealed Idea

As an add-on to my last post - the ESL blacklist site that was linked to in Jayray's post - won't open at my China location.
Do any other China based readers have this problem?????

The same. Is it really a problem for it to be pasted onto this site?

Try this:

If you can't get through, use an anonymizer.
