It may be a stretch, but I am considering moving back to the UK. I'm an American; however, I lived there as a teenager with a visa that stated "...is granted leave to remain in the United Kingdom for an indefinite period of time." Although I no longer have the physical visa (it was in an old passport that has long since been destroyed), I do still have my National Insurance Card and UK Drivers License.

Is it possible for me to simply show up and start working with what I have? What would an employer require that I don't have?

Thanks

If that's the same as Indefinite Leave to Remain - then it sort of expires after two years continually outside the UK. That is if the current rules apply to you... if it was a long time ago, it's possible that they were different.

If these rules do apply to you, then you would have to apply as a "returning resident".

Details here: http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/settlement/returningresidents/

Thanks, that gives me some info on my visa. I'll keep digging to see how it applies to mine.

Any idea about the National Insurance Card? I have that, but what else is required for the employer?

You will be required to demonstrate to your employer that you have permission to work in the UK as a non-EU passport holder.

Forget it. I spent about two months out of work once as I lost my (UK) passport and my birth certificate was from another country. Despite the fact I have an N.I number, English driving license, degrees from UK unis (and was actuqally studying for an MA at the time) absolutely everywhere, by law, must have a photocopy of either your passport, UK birth Certificate or a work permit showing your eligible to work in the UK.
