The Saudi forum seems to have a bitchy edge that is quite unique. A lot of the threads get reduced to name calling matches and patronizing tiffs.
One put down you see over and over again is that people in badly paid jobs somehow are poor teachers and deserving of the hell they often find themselves in. This assumption is quite wrong. Another attitude is the 'I've got an MA, so I'm good' idea as if that piece of paper alone cancels out anything else that might make you a bad teacher. Again, a false assumption. Then there are those who resort to that last bastion of pettiness, correcting typos.
Why is it that the Saudi forum seems to stir up so many gripes? Lack of a life, repressed sexual urges, no autonomy in the work place, horrible colleagues, taking the 10 steps to sobriety, less than ideal students, awful employers, the discrimination, dreadful holiday allowances.........?
For what it's worth,BAe is about the only truly worthwhile job I've seen there and most qualifications are wasted on such students in such institutions and environments.
I'm alright Jack but tonnes of people aren't. |

10 Steps ? It was 12 when I last looked ! What brought about this salvo ?
As for BAe I will say nothing lest I rile The Wingco, Group Captain or Flight Sergeant !
Has the poster been in KSA ? Has he experienced this strange place ? |

IMHO... What you see on the boards is a reflection of what you will find in the faculty rooms of the Gulf. You can take that as you wish...

They don't call it the "golden cage" for nothing. Luxurious lifsyle but yer'll need it after suffering day after day in the ring with your young "cadets"at the BAs Early Learning Center. |

I did over 3 years in the Gulf. So far I've done 4 in Libya. The students are so much better here and the money is quite good; not QP direct hire, but I save more now. BAe lets you buy a UK house in 5 years...no other place allows you to do that. KSA... I did the Bahrain flit. |

Then quit teaching them to misuse "UNIQUE" quite so much, bitchy. Or at least seem to.
Kidding aside, another framing of the OP:
Does pay=performance, does professionalism=skills ?
Degrees represent an audited endeavor-- a peerage. Their only value to reality is what can be demonstrated, not asserted.

Nice try. Not to be picky, but "kara" is "empty". Jes' like "Karaoke", or the more pedestrian "Carry-Oki"..."Empty Orchestra"...

Can you name some posters who have made this assumption? Because I honestly don't see this attitude on the board. I think you may be confusing it with posters drawing attention to a common attitude held by Saudi employers (not by the teachers themselves): Namely, that in order to be a 'good teacher' and hence get a decent job at one of the better-paying Saudi universities, you have to have an MA. The fact of the matter is that in the minds of many Saudi employers 'that piece of paper alone' does 'cancel out anything else that might make you a bad teacher.' But don't shoot the messenger.

The same reason some of the East European forums stir up so much puerile misogyny, maybe? |

Your Majesty !
Your loyal subject is somewhat perplexed that you should even THINK of visiting those far off places ! Things are posted there that are not fit to be seen by your royal eyes. |

Her Majesty is a big girl. There's not much on the Poland or Russia forums that could shock her. Give her a giggle perhaps but shock? I think not. |
