I had my medical check today and got a blood and urine test. But the night before I drank heavily (nearly a full bottle of that 50% chinese whisky).

Is this checked on the medical exam?

I tried to ask about what was checked in the blood and urine but I didnt get a specific answer. It sounded like 11 things were checked in the urine alone. Does anyone know what 11 things are on that list? I'd hate to get deported for one night of drinking in a country where a pretty good percentage of the people are heavy drinkers themselves.

I did just find this on the internet:

"The examination items include internal medical, surgical, five sense organs, electrocardiogram, chest x-ray and the laboratory examinations which shall consist of the serologically defined examinations for AIDS, venereal diseases, infectious hepatitis. If there is any unconformity in the certificate of health, the quarantine inspection physician is entitled to demand the applicant to re-take the examination or take supplementary examination. The charge rate for the verification is 20 RMB, if the supplementary examination is required, the applicant shall pay additional charges. "

So, I guess this means that failing any part of the test means the person is just re-examined. If I dont drink again before that point I suppose everything should be fine.

It would be nice to know exactly what is tested, though. Most of what I have read so far were just educated guesses.

I wouldn't worry about it. Basically, if you don't have HIV or Hepatitis or something you'll be fine. They might lecture you about it if anything.

the hepatitis thing is interesting. it looks like thats a deportable thing, which is really strange because most people who get it are totally cured after a few months and its impossible for them to be re-infected. so at that point theyre actually safer for the general public than someone who never had it. syphillis also is curable. why dont they just give you medicine instead of deporting you? seems a lot easier.

i imagine that if you are deported once for something like that they dont let you back into the country. makes no sense.

The medical exam is VERY cursory. They look for OBVIOUS abnormalities and AIDS. Don't worry about the booze.

In the medical hep b is ok, but the others are not. If you know about hep you will understand. Going drunk to a medical would probably be fine, going after a night of drinking er guo tou (cheap bai jiu) is definitely fine. I have done it. Drinking is legal, why would it be a problem?

The medical should be the least of your worries, mate. Your liver has a large black spot on it today that was not there yesterday.

Chinese white liquor is made from sorghum. That stuff is deadly. If you are a newbie to it than it can kill you. Stick to the beer for the first few weeks in country. The liquor here kills the Chinese on a regular basis.

I would hate to vomit all over the woman who does the sonogram. If you didn't want to vomit before; when she is done rolling around on your stomach you will want to vomit. I hate that test.

there's a reason you're usually asked to not drink alcohol 72 hours before blood/urine tests (or eat or drink anything but water 12 hours before the tests) back home. it's so medical professionals have a baseline to work from when looking at lab results.

they don't seem to emphasize this in china at all, so i don't think drinking heavily the night before a medical exam in china will hurt you too much (too many other tests they'd have to perform which they dont). but it will screw up the results of your tests a bit and if you have future tests where you didn't drink heavily, the results of the two tests won't look the same when compared with one another.

i hope you brushed your teeth and used some mouthwash though (standard procedure after a night of binging).

"chronic" hepatitis is what you are talking about. that only happens in a very small minority of the cases. the rest of the infections resolve on their own in a few months and then youre protected from future infections.

powned!

are you sure about this?

im very surprised if thats the case. i have read on the net about people "who had friends" who were deported but those things didnt say which hep was the problem.

do you know the exact list that is tested? it sounded like 11 items were tested in the urine sample. it wasnt clear, maybe 11 were in the blood and urine samples.

What if you're a really fat guy? I want to teach overseas but my weight problem is really a worry for me in traveling and working overseas. (It's a major problem in my life in general of course)

The medical exam is NOT cursory. It is very thorough.
My school keeps my medical report, so I can't be totally sure of the numbers, but there are about 9 procedures that you must go through.

Booze is not specifically checked, but it affects blood sugar, blood pressure, and other measures. But it's not really an issue.

It's true that they are really interested in STDs rather than general health.

Chest X ray
BP
Blood tests
Dental check
Height and weight
ECG
Hearing
Eyesight
Organ scan

and one other thing maybe, but I forget what - I was under the influence of drink each time. Thank God they don't check for short term memory loss Smile
