Guys I just want to move past all the toe-stepping and such and continue a useful discussion, so please accept a humble apology. I wasn't trying to offend anyone, and sorry if I did. And yeah I do get the point.

At the moment, not so much, but I'm sure I'll think of something. Actually, I know there's another thread about it, but while I'm here, any idea how one would go about getting a SIM in Japan for a UK iPhone? Or other phones, for the benefit of others.

I'll be in Japan in five days... I'm just pouring over subway maps and trying to figure out what to do!

What I do while I am in Japan is google map directions on where I want to go and it will tell you what train/s to take to get to that area. It works.. I found every club I was going to.. pay close attention to the land marks.. since most streets are NOT labeled.. soooo much fun, getting around at least Tokyo is an adventure in itsself.

Just what is it that you are "trying to figure out what to do"? This thread is becoming sidetracked now, and perhaps if you have a specific question unrelated to the OP, you might want to start a new thread.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to Shiori and Glenski, this has been really useful. I'm coming over with Shane in the summer too so this has been a big help.

Cheers! Laughing

When I worked for Shane (many moons ago) they seemed to allocate apartments randomly, with some adjustment for rent according to size.

In one small neighbourhood I had a typical 1 room with airline bathroom and 'kitchen' in the hallway. They charged me about 68.000 a month!

Round the corner was another new starter in a MASSIVE 2 bedroom/big living are and sep kitchen, (single guy) and he paid around 90.000. 2 others had 1 rooms with lofts and paid somewhere inbetween.

Several years later I moved to another area (still close to Ikebukuro) and rented my own place for 78.000. VERY big one room with great bathroom. The same company rented 2 bedroom places. NO key money.

Come to think of it I have never paid key money on a private apartment rental. Trying to remember the names of the places that list such apartments.

hehehe@people complaining about a 9 hour work day. That is a NORMAL work day, even back west. Right now I'm working in business in Taiwan and work from 09:30-20:00 on a short day, 21:30 a couple of times a week, and occasionally until 00:30, not too mention occasional weekend work. And, I have to commute 1 1/2 hours each way. ^_-

At the housing question, my advise is to first find out the actual details of the room, then find out what happens if you break the rental contract. If the room is a decent enough size, then I'd say go for it. No key money is a big plus. But, more importantly, it gets rid of one extra thing you have to deal with and helps in the transition period. As long as it is decent size, I'd say go for it~

One thing that wasn't mentioned, though, is if you will have to support your GF on your salary, as well. Do you? If so, I think Tokyo is going to be very tight financially with that rent. If not, well then the rent isn't an issue at all as you just split the cost~

At the OP: this is a good initiative to get people connected before landing. And I agree w/others that the scope should be beyond Tokyo, as you will have a similar experience to somebody in Osaka as well, and can leverage eachother later professionally.

Well said Shiori. I'm flying out in two hours - anyone else arriving real soon?

Shiori, I'm just saying that, especially for Asian standards, a 9 hour day is not so bad at all, and really IS a normal work day pretty much around the globe. Apologies if it came off as belittling, it was more of an appreciate what you have type of thing. But you are correct, everything becomes relative.
