Where do you teach and how long is your summer break? Most institutions in the Gulf seem to give 60 days. I was told by someone in admin at my uni that the norm is 6 weeks or less in Oman. We get 6 weeks (U Nizwa). How about you? |

The small private college where I last worked in Oman gave 45 days. Everyone had to work summer school.
At SQU... many moons ago, it was 60 days. Perhaps someone still there can correct this if it has changed.
I have found over the years in the Gulf that private colleges almost all give around 45 days while most government institutions give 60.

Hi,
We had 60 at PMU (small private uni in SA). I don't know what the norm is here in Oman.
What is interesting to me is that there is so much sit around time after returning, that it would be easy to increase the summer leave at no cost.
Summer school would still be covered, and morale would be boosted tremendously. |

ahem... now what do we always say about using our logic system? You know how that works... or rather doesn't...
Even the places where I got 60 days, it was all about rushing back to sit around and stare at each other. At least now you can surf the web...

60 days at SQU, with options to teach summer courses or to take additional unpaid leave.

Good to see that it hasn't changed. I used to do summer school almost every year for the extra pay. (does it still pay extra?)
I like the option for taking unpaid leave. That is new. Their accounting system was so clunky at the beginning that they couldn't cope with many things that were out of the ordinary.

So at Nizwa University there is a summer term on top of regular two semesters and you have to teach the summer term? Is it correct?
So how many weeks of teaching does a full academic year consist of?

If possible, can my question about the summer term at Nizwa Uni be answered? I beseech.

''Naw, naw naw'' is very very nice.
Still, the question remains.
So, Dhofar Uni used to offer two handsome months of summer time. No hidden traps, solid two months. There was a summer term but it was up to a teacher to stay on and earn her extra.
UNizwa has on their calendar a summer term.
In some unis, the summer term is optional and who ever wants to teach it gets extra money on top of her full summer pay. Is this the case with U of Nizwa?
Long live long vacation! |

No.
You get six weeks summer holiday. If you take the second half of the summer, you teach summer school the first half. If you take the first half, you teach the end of summer school, and then molder through the month of August (and Ramadan). There is no extra pay. The powers that be say that all of the unis only give 6 weeks. This in spite of the fact that down the street both the College of Tech and the College of Applied Sciences get 2 months.
Used to be a pretty chill place to work, but this year was a real hoot. Hopefully it was an anomaly. |

Thank you, isabel.
Your ''No'' in reply hurts.
Tough, the story with the summer school. Very tough.
I reckon half of the summer schools is an extra month? How very ruthless on the teacher who had been on the go for some 10 months or so!
As I said, and as you said, not true that most unis give only 6 weeks summer time.
The norm is two months, i.e. sixty days, so more even than 8 weeks.
Plus - and this I find most unfair! - the summer semester is considered usually as an extra - and voluntary ! - assignment.
Those stay to teach who want to teach. And then they are paid extra for the summer work.
To mess up the summer vacation is the major offence in education. It is so very painful and creates a grudge - deservedly ! - even before someone signs up for a uni. Why??
