Hi,

I'm Irish and thinking of applying for the under 35 work visa in Canada. I would like to teach but I am not sure of the demand there for teachers. If it is anything like Ireland I will have to rethink!

Which city would be the best to base myself in as a teacher/has most job openings?

What is the best time of year to secure a job?

I have over 3 years experience, a BA, MA in a non - tefl field and a TEFL qualification but Is this enough to attract employers? Should I go and do the MA TESOL or DELTA first?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

I will be honest - the job market is not easy here.

Toronto, Vancouver, and if you can also speak French, Montreal. All major cities do have some work, but those are the "big three".

Since you would be teaching in a language school, generally the summer is hiring time, but there is openings all year.

It depends on where you would like to teach. I can't recall - is the under 35 visa for one year only? If so, you would probably be working a couple of part-time language school jobs. The BA/non-related MA & TEFL should be ok.

Usually, certifications (TEFL/TESL) must be accepted by TESL Canada as an equivalent:

You might need to email them to see if your certification is accepted (for example, i-to-i is not accepted). Most jobs advertise "TESL Canada Standard I or equivalent".

I would recommend an MA TESOL if you plan on teaching ESL for life! If you are just planning on doing it to teach in Canada for a brief period of time, I would say no. It is extremely difficult to get a job teaching English in Canada, period. The number of Canadians trying to get a position with an MA TESOL also makes it quite difficult. The job market is very competitive. Most Canadians teaching with MA TESOL in Canada have at least 10 years experience, because they have to work their way into it. I imagine that it isn't much different in Ireland.
