I recently earned a Master's (M.Ed.) in TESL. I also have a TESL certificate (100 hours + practicum).

If I were to come to Thailand, what kind of position/salary should I be aiming for?

Would I be better off trying to secure a job before I arrive, or should I just go?

Munroe,

With an MA in TEFL you can expect recognition but poor pay in Thailand. Good luck! Smile

Munroe,

With your credentials, you should seriously consider working in another country, and then spending your money on the beaches in Thailand. Most universities will praise your qualifications, however your salary will generally be the same as everyone else.

With an MA in TESOL you should only apply at top knotch international schools in the LOS. Otherwise you'll be wasting your education, knowledge and above al time teaching for Thai government or private schools/colleges and/or universities. The major problem in Thailand is there is a new trend toward volunteer TEFL teachers and no matter what degree/certificate or level of experience one has here you will not be given a decent salary. Thailand is not for making money but for sanuk and spending money! Shocked

MOD EDIT people are getting negative here....

Top international schools are not looking for MA TEFL/TESOL graduates. They are looking for qualified subject teachers, so unless you have a PGCE/teaching credential you won't get in. I tried it. However, you can work for mid-tier international schools, which will get you something in the range of 60,000.

It's a myth that MA TEFL/TESOL qualified people won't make any more money than 4-week CELTA people.

You can also work in Universities, which will get you big money if you can get in the international programs.

Don't be discouraged!

You may consider opening up a language school in BKK with an MA in TESOL you can promote yourself better to the Thais (Better Recognition) thus getting more students. Good luck! Smile

MOD EDIT

An MA TESOL will open doors to international schools. Not the top ones, but certainly smaller ones that pay far more than any government school or language center.

MOD EDIT

Even the best Internationals have EFL/ESL departments along with ex-pat packages for MA grads.

With an MA in TESOL you may consider opening your own English language school in thailand. This will give you the recognition you deserve and hopefully pull many students in your door thus providing you with better income potential in the LOS. Good luck! Smile
