I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with ESL dewey. I'm currently trying to find out more about them.

What kind of job do you plan on applying for? That would help us in offering you advice.

Well, they gave several jobs that there are currently openings for teaching english at private junior high and other schools.

I suppose I should give more information;
The person I spoke to was David Huang, and the website of the corporation is www.esldewey.com .
I'm wondering if anyone else has worked for dewey/esldewey and/or knows of them.

Are you applying for a job in a high school or a language school?

Do you have a teacher's license back home?

It's a high school, and I have a teaching credential in California (in Math and History), but lots of firing and no jobs going on right now in California.

Dewey usually give out the cram school jobs that no-one wants. I would be careful about taking a cram school job from them. However, public or private school positions might be OK. Most PS go through recruiters and you should end up with a decent job. Having said that, your own personal mileage may vary Smile

Except some positions offer unpaid summer vacation. Unless you are rich and don't want to get paid in the summer.

Why Taiwan? The culture? The people? The money? The students? They learn differently than Western kids. Also, you will have to make a big adjustment when going from a Western school to an Asian school. Teaching EFL is not the same as teaching math or US history in a Cali school. An international school is where you would probably fit in easily...

Not to mention that high schools in Taiwan only pay $2000 US a month.

I came to Taiwan through ESL Dewey, after applying through posting on this website. I spoke with a man named Adrian.

I'm currently working at a Joy school in a very small, backwater town in Taiwan. I had a generally positive experience with the folks from this recruiting agency, in that I spoke with them often before coming to Taiwan, and they were always available to answer questions and interpret between my employer and me. However, the job that I've taken here was really disappointing. I don't know anyone who is a fan of the Joy school system (wish I had known before I trapped myself in contract) and the town in which I live is utterly isolating. There are no local English speakers, or any other foreigners, so my experience here thus far has been introspective and lonely.

I haven't spoken much with Adrian since coming to Taiwan, though we have arranged a meal (and our first meeting since I've been here for 3 months) next week. I don't know if recruiters generally hold your hand when you first arrive, or drop you after their work is done. My experience with ESL Dewey was somewhere in the middle.

Ultimately, I'm unsure if any of my current unhappiness can be traced to lack of information or direct description from ESL Dewey, or perhaps I would have superimposed my own romantic illusions of teaching abroad onto any offer that was made to me. My advice with all recruiters then, is to move with caution, and ask as many lurid questions as you can think of, and hope that you aren't being mislead.

I am working with ESL Dewy at the moment. Apart from sending me to an interview on the wrong day they have been good. Clear communication, honest and prompt.
