So I'm brand new to this forum and I could use some advice.
I have nearly 5 years teaching experience (3 in Hiroshima-shi) with a Cambridge CELTA and bachelor's degree, currently teaching at a private university in Denver, CO. I am considering going back to Japan by the end of the year, and would like to get feedback from the good people on these forums.
First of all, with my experience and qualifications, what would be reasonable salary expectations (I'm thinking at least 300,000/month)?
I've worked for an eikaiwa before (GEOS) and do not want to repeat that experience. Am I better off applying for public schools or universities? How can I find ones that are hiring?
My Japanese is minimal and I keep losing it daily. How much of a detriment will this be?
I like to think I'm hireable but I just want to make sure before I start seriously applying for work. My thanks in advance to anyone who answers. |

Without an MA getting a position in university is going to be hard.
But your biggest obstacle is the fact that you are considering coming here near the end of the year. This is not a good time for finding work here, certainly at public school level. The hiring periods for public schools are April and September...April being the major hiring season. |

Sounds reasonable under most circumstances, but nowadays things are not that reasonable. You do know, don't you, that the market is flooded with teachers right now, and competition is high. You only seem to have 3 years with GEOS under your belt. Not sure where you planned to go, location wise and type of employer. Bigger cities may be your best bet for that kind of salary. You can see on many ads (skipping ahead of myself here; see below).

You are far from qualified for university work. Public schools would require being an ALT through JET program or a (lousy) dispatch agency. You're prime material for them. Only rarely do people get direct hires at public schools, and that usually takes contacts, better experience, and presence in Japan.
How to find who's hiring? Read the ads. You found GEOS, didn't you? Search for similar sites (which I've posted a zillion times).

To teaching? Not at all. As a GEOS teacher of past, you already know that you don't use J in the classroom. For daily life, of course knowing more will help. It may even land you a job in itself because an employer might think he won't have to mollycoddle you with daily survival stuff. Case by case.

Why wouldn't you be hireable? You already have experience here.

Absolutely right. |
