My favourite part of the Middle East is the Edgware Road in London.

Hah! When I stay in London it's at the Edward Lear B & B. Edgeware? I know it well! It's where I had my first taste if the Irish black elixir. I've sworn off ALL 'merican beers save Samuel Adams, a very good craft beer.

Marble Arch, much? Hozabout the loonies at Speaker's Corner?!?

Dear NCTBA,

"Hozabout the loonies at Speaker's Corner?!?"

Hey, a little respect, please. This is where we loonies go when we're not standing on a box at Speakers' Corner. Very Happy

Regards,
John

Sorry, scot. May I offer you the world's smallest violin. And, it is playing, sir, just for you...

Dear NCTBA,

Hey - how about ME? After all, I was the OC (original complainer,) and I resent that only scot47 is getting the violin serenade. Smile

Regards,
John

Well, if you want to experience ME culture I recommend you stay away from the wealthy Gulf countries (Kuwait and UAE in particular). I just spent two years in Kuwait and I learned more about Filipino culture than Arab culture. Why? Because in your day to day life you will have practically no contact in the locals outside of work and ministry visits.

There are two main reasons for this: First, practically everyone in the service industry outside of lead management is hired from abroad. Thus, it is unlikely you interact with any locals as you go about your daily business.

Second, the Arabs in these countries generally only socialize within their own families. I knew two western ladies who were married to Kuwaitis, and despite being in country for over 20 years both of them admitted that they haven't made any real Kuwaiti friends outside of their family.

To be honest I was quite bored in Kuwait, and I was glad to be leaving after two years.

It is getting like that in the States. After living in Asia, I returned to the states and I have never felt so lonely. No one visits or hangs out. Everyone is at home making love to their pc.

For travelling in vacations KSA is the best. However for your purposes I would suggest Egypt or Syria, though don't expect to save any money.

I saved 80% of my wages in Tokyo. Maybe it is possible to do the same in Syria?

I very much doubt it. Syria pays low... as does all of the Levant and North Africa. The few high payers (in Lebanon and Egypt) require a related MA and significant years in directly related teaching... IEPs... and experience with Arabic speakers.

My pay is not low for Syria. Also, it is only slightly lower than what I got in Tokyo, but in Tokyo that extra amount was absorbed by rent. My rent in Syria is included in the employment contract. Also, I know it is a house with two separate apartments inside, one for each teacher. So in the end, I might even be able to save a little more. I am so frugal that other teachers come to me for loans and advice. In my neighborhood in Tokyo, even though our languages conflicted with communication, the neighborhood market men figured out what a tightwad and saver I was so they made special deals for me. I got trays of Salmon slices and bundles of spinach far below other market costs with other freebies thrown in.

Sounds tolerable... now you just need to get the visa questions cleared up.
