While fruit-picking in Australia does sound exciting, I'm not sure if they pay for that. Wink

Off-topic, but they certainly do pay for it. There's such a demand for fruitpickers in Australia in fact that for people with working holiday visas they will give you an extra extension if you're willing to work in rural areas doing that kind of work. Don't give up on the English teaching idea though Wink

Aeon, ECC and Shane are still doing okay (to varying degrees), so it seems.

I've been out of the game for several years, but my experience was that those three companies were the solid ships of the industry.

I don't foresee a time when foreigners teaching English in Japan will end. One on hand, eikaiwa seems so frivolous. On the other hand, Japanese do like to travel, experience foreign things (preferably in a safe, sanitized setting), and engage in cultured hobbies; they also need that resume line to get their kids into the right schools. Eikaiwa does have a real place in Japanese society, but economic conditions will cause Japanese to start expecting more efficiency. It also seems that eikaiwa are being watched a little extra closely for shady practices. It might eventually narrow down to something like the three listed above, maybe an innovative entrant or two, and the neighborhood ones.

I have a Japanese friend in the ESL industry, and her exact words were, "The one language school is in trouble now is GEOS, so you might avoid that school." And lo and behold, when I went to their website out of curiosity, it was a dead link. My guess is they're going the way of NOVA.

If you're talking about geoskids.com, yeah that one is up. But it's funny that the link on the top of that page that says "Apply for other GEOS positions" takes you to some German website...

I got out of the big G last year and they were closing/merging schools in the Tokyo area at that time. Enrollments were down and schools weren't making their (ridiculously high) monthly goals that were set by the head office.

Wouldn't be surprised to see them sink, but it would be pretty sad.. those are real people with jobs, foreigners and Japanese.
