|
|
Hi everybody. I am an undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor degree in applied linguistics. I would like to find out what is the beginning salary range for new EFL teachers with a Bachelor in Applied Linguistics with a TEFL certificate. I have NO EXPERIENCE. I am a native speaker. I would like to find out what should be the minimum salary I should accept and what should I aim for as a newbie. I reiterate what should I aim for pertaining salary and benefits (housing, children education allowance, round trip airline ticket, transportation to and from work, and free healthcare.) I have a wife and child; so FAMILY STATUS is very important for me. I really want to work in KSA. I don't mind the culture. I am familiar with it. Also it would be a plus if anybody who is there with family can share the cost of living costs for a small family(wife, husband, and 2 kids(under 5 years).)
I thank everybody for their help and advice. |

I forgot to mention. I am U.S. Passport Holder. Of course, the bachelor in applied linguistics is from a U.S. university. |

You may get around 9-11K SAR/month, depending on the type of establishment (usually colleges/universities). Schools have been known to pay as little as 6-7K SAR/month...

Wait... you are an undergraduate student with no experience? Why are you posting on other threads giving advice when you probably have no idea what you are talking about?
With your limited credentials (basically nothing) you may have trouble finding jobs that will give you family status. Not to mention finding employers who are dependable enough to drag a family all that way.
Spend a few hours reading the threads on this board. Teaching in Saudi can be a nightmare for the uninformed who are chasing the rumor of big money/benefits... or for Muslims who want to work there for religious reasons.

VS is right.
With your limited credentials, you're looking at (at best) a low salary with only the bare legal minimum of benefits. It's highly unlikely you would get family status, especially as employers are cutting back on this. Get a few years of experience, with a proper CELTA and/or an MA under your belt, and then think about applying to KSA. |

No experience means one of two things -
No job
OR
A job with an employer who will pay the minimum and treat you like you were a hand on a sugar plantation.
Get some experience and then think about KSA, but forget about those dreams of big bucks. Those days are over (if they were ever here). |

Is something wrong with you. I wasn't posting advice. Read my post correctly. I urge you to show me where I gave advice. I am requesting information about starting packages for newbies in ME. Anyways I have some information already from a friend. I just wanted everybody's two cents on it. I am aware that newbies can receive packages with family status and decent pay. I am not trying to hit the jackpot either. I just want to raise my family in an Islamic environment. You sound pretty arrogant. I know I will start on the bottom but my credentials will improve as I gain more experience and a masters. Duhh!!! Anyways I am not uninformed. I have been to a ME country. I am aware of the Saudi Arabian culture. Thank you for your info. |

Dear omar08,
"Why are you posting on other threads giving advice when you probably have no idea what you are talking about? "
"Get a TEFL certificate, then apply for jobs. Wish you the best."
"Saudi Arabia is a place to save $$$$."
"Why work for them if they treat you as a second-class citizen?"
"Most of the people that I know have their salaries direct-deposited into their accounts in the states. This is much easier and cheaper than sending transfers."
Perhaps VS was referring to these posts, which, I believe, could be taken as "giving advice."
But one thing is fairly certain. With a Bachelor's degree, no experience, and a TELF certificate (Would that be one gained online? I hope not.,) any job you're likely to get will not be a very good one, and you may not be able to save all that much.
The good jobs require an MA and at least three years overseas teaching experience.
Regards,
John |

Hey, John and VS...he wasn't giving "advice", with those top creds and extensive experience, the poster with all of 8 posts to his credit was giving "information"! ... ...

Nothing wrong with me... but apparently you didn't read my post very carefully or "correctly." Here I have also copied it for you in case you missed its repetition in JohnSlat's post:

Mr Slat has copied out all the advice I had just read on other threads... not overly accurate advice I noted as I read it... before finding your self-identification as a newbie to EFL, Dave's Cafe, and the Saudi board.
I suggest that you re-read all the other posts on this thread as you missed the accurate analysis of your extremely limited possibilities to get any kind of decent job that provides family status. Entry level jobs are almost all single status. I would second the advice that you would be well advised to get a couple years of classroom experience and an MA first. Perhaps you should check into the Fellowship/Teaching Assistant positions in US universities where you can earn an MA while teaching in their IEP.

Johnslat, what I posted is common knowledge. For example, you don't have to jump of a cliff to know it is bad for you. The only reason I posted approximately 4 other posts was to be able to reply to veiledsentiments quote. You have to do five posts before you can do it. So the only info I mentioned was common knowledge that you should get a TEFL certificate before you get a job in KSA.Which I believe nobody will say I was wrong without a doubt? And so on. And I just mentioned my own personal opinions about things I know.Note: I have been to ME. I am able to talk about the Saudi Arabian culture and ect.. Man, why does everybody like attacking ppls?I was just trying to get more info about job prospects, salarys, ect when posting this topic. I wish everybody a nice day. |

This makes no sense... you posted all of your posts while I was sleeping and I responded the next morning - about 11 hours later (see the time stamps). I read this post last... after all of your other posts, so those posts could not possibly have had anything to do with your responding to me... because I had not yet responded.

You need 5 posts in order to do Private Messages. That has nothing to do with your responding to me.

What do you mean by "TEFL Cert"? An online 'diploma' granted by some obscure 'institution'? Or an internationally recognised 100+ hour course which includes extensive teaching practice? Because it will have to be the latter if you are to have any hope of getting anywhere near a decent job in KSA. |
