Walking down the road to the nearest grocery store. That's a no-no here for women.. unless you don't mind the harassment from passing men and cars or the attacks on your character. |

Mexican food. The Lower East Side. Plays I can totally understand. Subtlety. My friends. Spacing out during a really boring conversation/meeting and still having a clue what we're talking about.
I don't miss television though. And I do agree that other things fill the void, and will thus become missed when I leave. |

Ah, yes, American breakfast. Whole wheat waffles with fruit and whipped cream on top. Home fried potatoes with eggs and tomato. Real southern biscuits with butter and jam.
Mountains. Ocean. It's very flat, very marshy, very continental here.
Cold, drinkable tap water.
Clean, well-lit, dust free libraries with books that include pictures sometimes (in the how-to section), friendly reference librarians, restrooms, video machines, tapes, computers, all in a language I understand, open-stacks.....
humor. The spontaneous, quick, language/situation/cultural reference/wordplay based kind.
cheap (relative to income) movie theatres. |

I'm definitely going to miss my Dog Emmet the most, he's a 9 year old minature short haired dacshund and he totally dotes after me. The realisation that once im on that plane i'll probably never see him alive again is a hard one to take |

Irish Blood--
Your post was very touching. I remember calling home from the Czech Republic and having my parents put my little babydolls (my doggies) on the phone. I lost both of them while I was in Prague, and I still feel the void.

I, too, am missing my puppies.
We have three, one is the little one in my avatar.
I'm also missing showers with hot water that lasts more than 10 minutes, family, vegetarian sauces to fry veggies in, pasta sauce and noodles, CHEESE, CD stores that carry what I want, canned baby corn (MMMMmmmmmm....), being able to go out at night without everyone telling me I shouldn't, Depo-provera , V8 and knowing where to go in order to get what I want.
I'm really hoping that my oldest doggy doesn't have any bad experiences while I'm gone. He's about 9 or 10, but I'll be home before too long, unless the Chinese can convince me to stay. |

just bring the puppies along!!!
My wife brought her dog along ( i refuse to say I won a French Poodle..it's hers..no really..) and did not have a shadow of a problem getting through in Beijing International. He came on board and travelled on her lap most of the time... |

My dog Bruiser is who I will miss the most too I think! Makes me sad to even think about leaving him!! Anybody ever take their dog into Japan? My concern is that I probably won't be able to have a dog in my apartment. He's a young pup though and I only plan to spend a year away, so I think it will be OK...he'll be at home waiting for me to return.
I've enjoyed all the other posts about the food- now I know what to stock up on before I depart and I may have to invest in a bread maker.... |
