Perhaps you can land yourself a job before the summer holikdays begin, although that is not so common. The SARS scare may be a little helpful in yor case.
Otherwise it is the end of August. Make yourself available for an interview before the month is over, and you can get an invite for a presentation before the new term begins on 1st of September!
You can probably work through summer and get a new job in a training centre during that period. |

I would say now is a good time for the fall semester. In August many of the people you need to talk to will be on vacation. In June, the schools will be receiving many more applicants, becoming very busy. Just remember,if you accept a job in May, reconfirm in July, keep in touch with them.
If you are going to visit schools in person, now is a good time.

Most public universities and colleges recruit year round. They usually hire in July-August or Jan.-Feb.
Top tier hire in July-Aug only as they usually have no mid-year vacancy.
2nd tier and 3rd tier have vacancies in mid-year due to pre-mature contract terminations. (Teacher dissatisfaction normally rather than the other way around)
Delter, Telfort and Mount Royal Business Institutes hire all year as classes begin when marketing fills a new class. Same with many private schools that are more like training centers. |

most of the better universities and colleges (not the institutes) are always willing to talk to new faces. carry a resume and a copy of your diploma and any certificates you have. have some personal cards made up with your name and your home address and your cell number and e-mail. looking for another job and handing out a card with your current employer is really tacky and certainly disloyal appearing.
some universities will give you a verbal commitment in May and June. a way to "make sure" you have the job is to ask if you can move a "few things" into your flat. if they say "yes." you have the job. now, box up some stuff, winter clothes are good right now because it is getting warmer and put your name on the box, and get it over to the flat. if there is a teacher in the flat, make sure he or she is leaving voluntarily, and doesn't care about the storage. we did this. it worked fine. the other teacher was on to a job with a company in Beijing. nice to move bit by bit, and if the school deceides to put you into another flat, all you stuff is in boxes, and they will move it for you.
the better universities want happy productive teachers, really! |
