Has anyone here ever done this?
Or, has anyone here actually been refused entry into Japan for this reason? |

I sort of did this. I bought a one-way ticket to Japan. Then I bought a REFUNDABLE round trip ticket from Japan to Korea and back again way later, in case I didn't get a job. Then after I got a job, I returned the ticket (to Orbitz) for a full refund. They didn't even take a service fee out or anything. |

This is quite a commonly asked question, so have a scroll through the topics or try a search. Briefly, the issue is not so much with getting into Japan as with being allowed on the plane at your departure airport. In many cases the ground staff will not allow you to board if you have only bought a one-way flight and don't have a visa allowing you to reside in Japan. |

I was told that one-way tickets are okay, but to make sure you have enough money on-hand to show that when the time does come, that you can purchase a ticket back home. |

I have heard of people actually being made to purchase a full fare return flight right there at the airport or they weren't going to be allowed onto the plane, so I'm afraid you can't be sure just having the cash will be enough. |

You do need a return ticket. My husband came back into Japan on March 9th and the airline wouldn't let him fly unless he bought a return flight. He had a COE and everything, but it didn't matter to them. You could try it and say you plan on touring Korea and will take the Beetle boat to Busan. |

I just arrived in Japan on Tuesday and I had a one-way ticket and I had no problems at all. Actually, most of the people that I am training with this week had no problems with one-way tickets. |

I'm headed out there myself on the 28th, but by the time I get there, it'll be the 29th. Anyway, I'm planning on coming over on a one-way ticket, but I'm going to try and have enough money just in case it's demanded of me to purchase a return ticket. |

Yeah, I entered on a one-way as well. No problem. It's a better idea to buy a round trip, though, for the maximum time allowable and then change the date when you're here, so you don't have to spend the money for two one-way tickets. If you come over without a job and don't get one, you've got your ticket home. If you do get a job, you go home 364 days later for cheaper. |

For the record, I arrived yesterday through Haneda with no problem. Nobody batted an eyelid. |

The big question is who did you fly with and where from? Airlines get heavily penalized for bringing in people what then get turned away at a country's borders due to non-eligibility. So it does seem quite surprising that there are airlines who would consistantly not make the required checks before letting you board a plane.
When I flew back to Japan on a non-direct return ticket, check-in staff made me show them the relevant stamps in my passport then held on to my boarding pass until I went and got them double checked with a member of sales who had much more experience dealing with Japanese entry requirements. |

That sounds like a bogus airline. The whole purpose of the COE is to be the direct avenue to a visa. Sorry to hear he ran into problems. What airline and departure port? |

Or an airline who still has old info about the visa process. Doesn't surprise me; the London consulate still had signs and posters up all over only this time last year saying that COEs must be taken for processing before entering Japan. |
