Hi everyone,
I have been thinking about returning to Mexico to teach ESL for a while. Now that I have completed my Master's degree, I am preparing for the big move.
So far, I have noticed that many have emphasized the importance of networking for jobs in Mexico. I was wondering if you had suggestions about how to network specifically in Mexico.
Also, I am considering moving to Cuernavaca, Guadalajara, DF, and Estado de Mexico. One of my concerns is the crime rate in Mexico. I was specially concerned when I found out about the confrontation between the Mexican army and the cartels in Cuernavaca some time ago... For those who live in any of the places I mentioned above, what has your experience been like in terms of crime rate?
Thank you for your time! |

I'd say go to Guad or DF. plenty more opportunities for networking and the like.
and well, you just smile, introduce yourself, and shake a hand, and maybe a kiss on the cheek with the ladies. slowly but surely, you start making connections, and sorting out the good from the bad.

Once you have decided which part of the country that you'd like to be in, I would recommend joining MEXTESOL.
I am the president of the chapter here in Jalisco and we have 130 members. The idea of the assosciation is to provide opportunities for professional development as well as opportunities for EFL/ESL teachers to network.
Regular activities are organised - for example we're currently planning a regional conference for June and this would be a good place for a person to come, meet their peers and to go to some workshops!
Membership is just 200 pesos a year, so it's not expensive and I also think that membership of a professional organisation looks good on your resume too!
Take a look at the national MEXTESOL webpage www.mextesol.org.mx. MEXTESOL is also an affiliate member of TESOL.
Knowing the presidents of the other chapters, I know that if you become a member of the local chapter, then they are more than happy to help you in any way they can!
Good luck! |
