I am planning to take my guitar with me to my next assignment. Can I get away with bringing it on a plane as carry-on or will I have to check it? Can I insure it if it is checked?

what I did was buy a half-size guitar when I went to Russia and I had no problem on Aeroflot. It was just one of my carry on items.
When I went to Morocco I brought the same guitar as a carry on item, and no problem. It was nice because it could fit in the overhead storage compartment.

Your best bet would probably be checking with the specific airline(s) you are considering using,if you have decided which one you will use. Some airlines woukd probably have no problem letting you carry it on...others might not let you.You can probably get better specific info from the airlines themselves.Same with the insurance.Any insurance you might take out would probably only compensate you partially for the loss of the guitar...but again check with the airline. They can probably give you better info. |

I've done a lot of traveling with instruments. Never had a problem with a guitar, although we were given a hard time with a cello once. I think it probably depends on the size of the plane too...anyway we always just stuck the guitar up in the closet with the coats. I'm sure though with airline restrictions increasing it might be getting harder... |

Call your airline. Each airline is different, even different flights on the same airline are different. Call them.
Most airlines will let you take a guitar as carry on, if it's small-ish in a small case. I've just moved from Ecuador to Korea (DELTA then Korean Air) and was able to take my guitar in cabin.
Most airlines are slow to commit, though- meaning that you may not know until you get there about what they'll let you do. Have a contingency plan. YOu can insure it, but if it winds up in the cargo hold in a soft case, this is small comfort.
Best,

Wow, resurrecting a seven-year-old thread! Maybe the OP can come back and tell us how he fared...

Hey OP from 7 years ago, and the others that are just as interested in knowing opinions of the OP's subject. I recently bought a "Baby Taylor" guitar, it plays beautifully for a 3/4 size guitar, I haven't touched my big drednaught since buying her. I do look quite silly playing it, since I am a very large guy; Someone mentioned that I looked like a "monkey humping a football", when playing.
This guitar is allowed on most airlines, which is good, because I can walk down the aisles and play mariachi music for tips, in order to pay for my meals and drinks!
If you decide to check out the Baby Taylor, be sure to buy the Mahogany top, otherwise the bass will suffer. |
