Well, here's someone who apparently likes the Manor of Rats:

Name: Khayyam Zubair
E-Mail: [email protected]
Homepage Title:

Location: Riyadh
Comments: Manarat is a great school believe it or not its the best school I've ever bean to. I came here this year. I have heard that past years it wasn't very good. But now its simply awesome. We have a new principle. Our school produced the best results in KSA for IGCSE with 80% A*s. All the teachers are great and are one of the best around the globe.
Its really really worth the fee,
a great school
If you need any other information about Manarat feel free to email and ask me @ [email protected].

That's a good offer for what you have in terms of qualifications. In fact, for not having a teaching certificate, that's excellent. (for Saudi)

Finish off the certification asap and then come back to Saudi to teach in a British school or an American school (in Jeddah, Riyadh, or Khobar/Dhahran) for about SR. 12,000/month plus free fully furnished housing and the other usual perks (tickets, medical insurance, etc). Not to mention, the much more professional working environment compared to whatever school you have the offer from.

I had really hoped to pick up a position overseas as I am somewhat disillusioned with the US and the current political climate. After living here for twenty years it is disheartening to see teachers still segregating themselves in schools or have principals give me the .05sec fingertip handshake on interviews. In-fact much of the negatives I see posted here about the Middle East I experience living in the US. My idea was basically to see the world while doing what I do best. Basically, I had hoped to ditch the US for a few years and maybe gain a new perspective on life (or as my pops thinks a renewed appreciation of the good parts of the US way of life).

Musings aside...I've made up my mind not to take the job under the stated conditions. Having done so, I decided to counter offer as I believe they were willing to negotiate. Thank you Johnslat, Trapezius, boundforsaudi, and Lazycomputergeek for being here and helping out.

I sent out a bunch of resumes.... I have an interview with a school in Bahrain next (don't expect much from this but at the very least it will hone my interviewing skills).

Sounds fun...
Fortunately for me, this is the first I've heard of Manarat.

Dear Seditious,

Wish you all the best. What you wrote reminds me of an old Peace Corps slogan:

DISCOVER AMERICA; LEAVE IT.

Living overseas in iran, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia for nearly twenty-two years certainly gave me a different perspective on life here in the States.
I'd say your Pop may be right. On the other hand, there have been overseas teachers I've known who've decided never to go back.
So, like one's reaction to Saudi, a lot depends on the individual.

Regards,
John

Everyone I know who worked in Manarat has been critical of the place - or hypercritical.

Hey Scot, ever worked in Jeddah and if so, know anyone from South America?
Only reason I ask is, you have the same family situation and temperament of someone I met there 8 years ago.

Dear Seditious,

"Only reason I ask is, you have the same family situation and temperament of someone I met there 8 years ago."

Sweet sufferin' succotash - you mean there's probably ANOTHER teacher with what I'd always thought was a "unique" temperament (emphasis on the "temper.")

John

I refuse to testify on the grounds that I might incriminate myself.

Dear scot47,

Not being an American citizen, you cannot invoke the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution to protect you.

"Indeed, the claim that extraterritorial aliens are entitled to rights under the Fifth Amendment--which speaks in the relatively universal term of "person"--has been emphatically rejected. Johnson v. Eisentrager, 339 U.S. 763, 784. Pp. 268-269."

John

Well, I'd say with the mounds of experience (One month!) that you have in saudi that makes you familiar with the people, "customs"...and I assume morays,

I didn't even know they had eels in KSA!

What is it, pray tell? If it made Manarat so good, perhaps it should be applied to other schools, too.
Surprised

Dear Kornan DeKobb;

The first one (morays) was an "intentional error" - humor was intended Very Happy )

The second one (principle) was unintentional - and perhaps an indication of the quality of instruction or learning at Manarat.

"I didn't even know they had eels in KSA! "

In the k.o.p., eels an' other slimy critter abound! Jes' lookie at some of the threads over the last year and a half!

I still git a giggle at looking at the statements made by these "instant experts" on saudi culture and, especially, the one who wuz so ably assisted by the U.S. Consulate!

Considering that the old one, popularly known as 'The Sphinx', was still working in his late eighties that is no surprise.

I taught there in the early nineties; the trick is to teach Primary/Elementary. The kids were the loveliest set of kids I've ever had to teach. There was one class where the first time I had to raise my voice was in February.
