| I will be moving to thailand soon. I have been living in Vietnam for 1 year. Will I need a police check from Vietnam and the USA or just vietnam? Also does anyone know if they check for hepatitis c in the health check. Here in Nam it is only for hep B. How picky are they on health check? Thanks |

The health check in Thailand is getting a little more serious these days. They used to just see if you were breathing. Now they check for syphillis (stage 3)-take blood, tuberculosis - chest xray, and a few other silly things like a physical examination to check for alcoholism - not sure how this is determined by looking at someone, lol. I don't beleive they check for hep at all, but I could be wrong.
As for the police check. I don't think anyone knows the specific rules (including the officials on the floor), but in my experience, anything that looks professional will be accepted. Thai officials usually like to see fancy seals and stamps and such. Don't use an online check. Not sure about checks from other countries, but it can't hurt.
You could get a criminal check done in Thailand to be safe, which can be used to get your work permit (in all cases that I have heard about).
The check takes about 30 minutes to do and about 2-4 weeks to process. It costs about 250 baht ($8-9) last I checked. It can only be done at the Royal Thai police Headquarters between the Siam and Childom BTS stations.

Don't worry about the police check. You'll be okay. Regarding the medical seems now you'll also get a body scan when visiting the Big Mango hospitals. Good luck!  TIT |

Any teachers looking to teach in Thailand PLEASE disregard this "advice".
Many schools and agencies in Thailand now require a criminal clearance letter from prospective employees.
Technically, BOTH officers from Immigration (Visa) AND officers from the Labour Office (work permit) can ask for a criminal clearance letter. While it is less common to be asked when applying for a Non-Immigrant B Visa, it IS much more common to be asked when applying for the work permit. It is often required by the Ministry of Education in this process. This does vary from province to province and case to case.
IMO, this is one new regulation that Thailand has got right.
It is easy and relatively inexpensive to get in most cases.

I haven't heard anything like this at all. As recently as 2 months ago, this was not the case for many teachers to Thailand getting work permit health checks. Occasionally hospitals in Bangkok will try to get you to do more expensive tests than are required. Make sure your school or agency has all the correct forms for you to take with you to the hospital to avoid these kinds of problems. |

| I would like to know as much as possible about teaching privately in Thailand. Is it legal? How would this affect my being able to get visa extensions? I have a BA and will have a TESOL this summer, so I will be qualified, but teaching privately suits me because I am a paraplegic and use a wheelchair. If a school would hire me, that would be great, but just in case I cannot find work for a school, i want to be sure of not violating any laws by teaching privately. Thanks. |

| You would be technically illegal but I'm pretty sure no-one would bother you. Technically, in order to get your work permit, you are only allowed to work at the school that hired you. Any other work is technically illegal but everybody does it. Good luck. |

Without a sponsor (school to work for) you will be stuck with a tourist visa.
Long term stays on tourist stamps/visas are getting harder, more complicated, and more restricted with each passing year.
