Say what you will about Walker, but he never let the Southern Baptists form a "police" with a carte blanche to execute people and generally mete out punishments in accordance with prescriptions found in 4,000-year-old "holy" book. Relativize all you want but the Saudis are behaving in the way the West stopped doing centuries ago, which - I think most of us agree - was a commendable thing.

None outside the neocons...and neocons don't fight or teach in the ME. If you got a problem with Dubya...you keep it with Dubya.

Don't broad brush 'mericans over here who winced every time he opened his yapper. We lived every day of those eight years constantly having to apologize for his ignorant ways. I don't think that you'd find many "yankistanis" who would defend him.

That flag behind Homer means something to us. Apparently, it meant NOTHING to him!

Well, it ain't just Dubya, it is his English poodle too! Plus I did said 'many', which can still be in the minority. However, without wishing to get too political (just the facts, ladies & gents), he got re-elected - I/you/we/they dunno how, but he did!

As for people saying that King Abdullah rocks, as Einstein once said, tout es relatif...?! Cool

4,000 years old?

What 'holy book' are you referring to?

Sarcasm isn't an argument. And how does a citation of executions relate to a stay of execution? Your argument seems to be (because you've yet to actually state one):
Given the number of executions in Saudi Arabia, its leader is without merit.
Is this your criterion? A number? And by its measure, can any support be lent to any of the King's current policies? Including the current stay of execution?
You would seem to be saying, "No." The King can only roll because the system of capital punishment in Saudi Arabia is too unlike your own.

You were off-topic talking about Bushie Jr., not your citing the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year. And it was to that post I responded. The next time you get the urge to "yell" in print, take it as an indicator you're likely not paying attention.

I hope no one will think this is a non sequitur to the discussion:

That seems to jibe with my memory of the latest Amnesty International numbers. Also well over 375 in Iran last year...and "thousands" in China. Over 55 in US but half of those were in Texas.

For what it's worth, I don't hold a black and white view of this--I think there is a gray area. For one thing, it is the belief of John Douglas, one of the two original FBI profilers (and other colleagues of his) that evil does exist: in the form of serial killers. They certainly can't be rehabilitated; There is no rehabilitation of serial killers. These monsters have tortured to death by definition at least four people--usually little girls, and women. Do we as taxpayers gain something by paying the $40,000 annually it costs to keep them in prison for the rest of their unnatural lives? (We already do let some of them live, partially because many states have no death penalty.) And they've already been studied exhaustively--not much more to learn there. Just a thought.
