"Shane school courses? someone's getting desperate"

I disagree. Unlike most McEnglish schools, Shane doesnt just let you teach without at least some background in TEFL. If you have a certificate(as well as all other legal requirements) you can start teaching from the time you get here(after some orientation).
If you dont have any certification then you first do a full time course(one week) at Shane before even arriving in Japan (I did mine at the Cape Town branch). After you do your week of theory and practice(taught some refugees), you still have to do another week in Japan before they will let you teach your regular schedule.
After that you still have to attend a few more sessions covering various materials that werent covered before, as well as serving as a feedback session to any problems you have experienced since teaching.
Then there are also regular work shops(though not mandatory)you can attend throughout the year(Anything from teaching toddlers to TEIC)

So in terms of teacher development, Shane takes care of the teachers.

Other places like GABA just give you a suit and tell you to go teach with almost no teacher support[

Hey, sid,

How did you get a work visa with only a HS diploma? This is obviously related to your other posts on making money. Thanks.

Nothing like taking something out of context Confused

The thread this was ripped from was about what DEGREEEEE you came to Japan with. Shane courses do not count in that department - no matter how much money they are paying you to advertise here or no matter how in love with them you might be....

And why does someone with a Master's in International Law end up taking courses in teaching kids at Shane? There's a story there somewhere and perhaps that will make for a more enlightening thread.

Ahh. Have to say sorry for my post. When I read this post my sense of humour got the better of me and I thought that after reading BA, BSC, MA, B.ED etc high school diploma was funny. Especially as I had already posted that I work at a university.
I do have a BA.

I guess the lesson is that I shouldn't put up post that only I find funny. Embarassed

Shame on you Sid. 20 lashes for you. What about in the classroom? I always tell jokes that only I understand or laugh at. I'm sure they're funny and it's not my fault that they don't have a sense of humour. Rolling Eyes

Since other people mentioned certificates as well as degrees, I added mine too. Both course are in-house certificate courses.

And no, Shane does not pay me to advertise here, nor do I particularly love them. They served as a handy stepping stone. I left them to teach at Universities.
But Im still trying to become a pro fighter LOL.

As to why Im not doing anything with the LL.M, I practiced law before coming to Japan(qualified attorney), and taught at Uni back home. Found teaching is MUCH more rewarding than law, and also don't like to be in the company of 'roaches....erm I mean lawyers.

But OK, I'll give in. Scrap the certificates. I only have a BA, LL.B, LL.M

Assuming you mean teaching accomplishments, here are mine.

Came here (Japan) in 1998.
Taught at language school (15-16 lessons per week from 6 different books, and in 3 different types of freestyle conversation classes including News Topics, Science Topics, and Debate).
Taught a dozen private lessons per week while working PT at a private HS (with 15-16 lessons per week).
Currently teaching FT at the HS with the same workload plus endless meetings. Also do occasional privates with scientists who need help making presentations. Also do freelance scientific proofreading.

I also have Level 2 JLPT but I found it to be a difficult test. Took me 2 attempts to get it. Was it difficult for you, Lynn?
