I don't know about laminate (I think others have covered that well) but my old one was really moldy after I left it on the floor of my car one summer and things got spilled on it.

The only problem I ever had was crossing from Thailand into Laos. The border official was afraid to touch it Smile

Just letting you guys know I got here fine Very Happy
The only person that actually gave the passport a second glance was the cashier at the bank of Tianjiin who was setting up my account

I think my stomach is the only think struggling to settle here Shocked
