How about a Bergman flick. Don't pretend you love those.

Hollywood? They won't all put you to sleep--too much elitism causes one to miss good stuff...

Well I watched 2012 the other week and after 2 n' half hours I was wishing for the end of the world. The old fingerwagger buys shelf loads of DVDs every week because they are so cheap and readily available here and our tastes are not entirely compatible. It's the sheer quantity on offer that often makes you miss a gem. I like comedies and oddball cult movies( 'Bubba HoTep' or 'Mystery Men' are good)or any of the Coen brothers stuff and I was brought up on US TV so no overt dislike there except again sheer quantity......get your implied reference to The Sopranos...it was exceedingly good but on the whole it's the exception rather than the rule IMHO

A refreshed Mr K

Dear Kipling,

if you like the Coen Brothers (and I certainly do) and "cult movies", can I assume that you've already seen "The Big Lebowski?"

John

Sopranos quote of the day

Dr. Melfi: Have you had a prostate exam?

TS: Hey, I don't let anybody wag their finger in my face!

Fargo's my favorite of the above. Yah!

HBO and Showtime have produced a lot of gems.

Have you seen Barton Fink? I've always thought John Goodman should have at least been nominated for an Oscar for his role in that movie:

"Look upon me! I'll show you the life of the mind."

Unfortunately You tube is banned here
So couldn't get to the Link
But agree whole heartedly
About dear old Barton Fink

Goodman is good in all those movies...he was good value in Roseanne too.

My favorite of ALL of the past 5 years or more is Michael Clayton. A couple of brief foreys into formula aside, it's just so cool and stylish! Clooney gives a textbook lesson in understated acting (but with more than enough personality to go around), which makes it all the more satisfying in the end when he raises his voice to the evil corporate murderess: "Do I LOOK like I'm negotiating?"

I fret a little about the advanced-3D craze for fear it will bring about a total degradation of cinematography into gimmicky made-for-3D shlock, with talking rats sticking their noses in your face and whatnot. Orson Wells would disapprove.

Dear heik,

I'd say fretting isn't necessary. The same or similar fears were likely felt when the "talkies" appeared and then when "color" was introduced.

I've been to see two 3D movies so far, and my feeling is that although it's a nice gimmick, what a movie will stand or fall on will remain the usual: the writing, acting and directing.

Regards,
John
