How does one go about being in Japan for 4 months exactly? |

Some people actually have the right to stay 6 months. Americans: 90 days.

Oh, okay. Just wondering why you'd say 3-4 when it's either max 3 or max 6. |

Because that's how long it usually takes to get a job and get paid if you arrive on a tourist permit. |

You are a little confused. The 3-4 months is talking about how long it will probably be from arriving here until you receive your first pay cheque and has nothing to do with the lengths of tourist visas that you are talking about.
Figure a month looking for jobs (unless you were really on the ball before you arrived and get a job sooner). Then you add the 2 months you'll probably have to wait from when you start working until when you first get paid since getting paid in arrears is standard practice here. That means you will need to have enough money to live off for at least 3 months, but that's assuming that the company allowed you to start working before you actually had your visa in hand.
If you struggle to find an employer or they want to do things by the book and not allow you work until you have a visa you can add a further month of not being paid, meaning you would need enough to survive for at least 4 months. |

Yup, that's what I meant.

That first month may be longer, too, especially with today's market and when someone chooses to come. |
