|
|
The two places where I'd really like to teach are Italy and Turkey--in that order of preference. But I've noticed that the Celta courses offered in Turkey are several hundred dollars/euros less expensive than those offered in Italy.
I realize it's the exact same certificate wherever one gets it. But I wonder if by trying to save some money and taking it in Turkey, I might hurt my chances for employment in Italy.
If nothing else, I assume the schools that offer the Celta in Italy are well-known to the Italian schools that don't offer it, and this alone might be a leg up, at least for that first teaching job. Or am I being unrealistic about the whole dynamic of hiring teachers?
If my heart is set on teaching in Italy, would paying the far higher price to take the Celta there be considered a potentially wise investment? If not, is there any reason I shouldn't consider applying for the Celta in the least expensive European country I can find--Bulgaria, say?
(Yes, I do have an EU passport, which of course won't do me much good in Turkey).

I think the only advantage of taking the CELTA in Turkey, in your case, would be that the training centre should have good contacts with employers in the country. However, even this can only steer you - you'll still be responsible for submitting CVs, interviewing, and possibly teaching demo lessons on your own, so the advantage is a bit limited.
Turkey's a nice option, IMO (for what that's worth). |

Thanks, spiral, I appreciate the response. But I believe you mean Italy rather than Turkey here?
Maybe the info I should have requested is: how well known throughout a region or country do schools offering the Celta course tend to be? If I'm job hunting beyond a 50 km radius of the school, is it likely to have any name recognition? If I'm in Italy, for example, is it unrealistic to think a prospective employer would look at my cv and say, "Oh, you took the Celta at X School here in Italy, I know the director there, I'll give him/her a phone call and see what they have to say about you." Is this what you mean by "good contacts" or did you mean something far more localized? How tightly-knit is the the English teaching community likely to be within a given country?
I'm also thinking (presuming, actually) that if a school has several Celta-certified candidates for a teaching position, those who took the Celta course in-country might have an advantage over those candidates who took the course in a different country. Or is this a false assumption? And if it's not, would this be a slight advantage or a major advantage?
Thanks again. |

Sorry, you're right - I should have written Italy, not Turkey.
I think the advantage of taking the CELTA in country is generally slight, is my own overall opinion. That's the best reason to take the name brand cert course as opposed to generics - employers should basically know what they're getting, even if the cert was earned elsewhere than in their region. |
