I just got this email from my Tech teacher friend in Doha. He may not write to suit English teachers, but he is one hella teacher for technical and practical refinery operation. And the boys in his class give him their rapt attention -- they are better behaved in his classes than in any English class that I have ever observed, even mine!
So, Banana Republic, take the latest information about the events in QP and try to become the very best human being you can!

Gid-day Cobbers,
It has been about a month since I came back off leave and February what a month that turned out to be?
The first three weeks back was getting over the jet lag and back to work blues, self assessment, why am I here, do I belong here,
is what I do going to make any difference, the salary is shit, exchange rate shit it was between 1.8 and 2.4 QR to the AUD now it is around 3.5/6 QR to the AUD, working conditions are shit, accommodation is shit, traffic is grid locked, the climate polluted, everyone you meet has the camel flue i.e. thick green gob in the lungs, throat, nose and ear cannels and always coughing.
And I am considered one of the lucky ones, as I had the full range of flue jabs in December 2009. I feel better already it, is good therapy to have a good grizzle about life, it clears the mind, sharpens the wits and elevates the soul.

The last week of February many unexpected events unfolded: On that weekend a very powerful local had a miss-happing. And early Saturday morning the security forces were on full alert checking everyone who was out and about that time of day, which in the Middle East are most people. Unfortunately one of staff members was driving home from a local night club, was stopped, and found to have some booze on his breath, consequently he spent three days in the Doha Hilton, no body new his wear about, and people were ringing the hospitals and police stations, finally one of Arabic speaking teachers located him and bailed him out for 2,000 QR and a good behavior bond, but the staff member has to face the Shari (Islamic court) in a few months time.
Sunday the start of the working week in parts of the Middle East was uneventful for me! I completed my duties at RAA TC and stopped off at the tea room and it was abuzz with chatter. Apparently I missed all the excitement, the QP internal security and serious crime team raided the Mafias Offices and taken away some of the managers. This how the events was described to those who missed it, two guys in special uniform armed and a men in a suit caring a special brief case arrives unannounced, removes the managers from their offices. The man in the suite opens the brief case and one of the guards remove the office door locks and replaces it with one of theirs and all sign some document, next they move into the office and the brief case is open again and special tools are laid out and the computer hard disc is removed a label place on the hard drive all sign, the hard drive is placed in a special anti static bag all sign, then placed in a special padded bag
all sing and placed into the man in the suites brief case and locked thee times each having separate keys. Every thing in the office is sealed, office locked and key place in the man in the suits brief case and locked with all three keys. The area is off limits and is a serious crime scene. Some of the managers have returned, but there are areas still off limits. And nobody has a clue what has been going on over the years the Sudanese Mafia has been in power. Take care,

In places one needs an Aussie to English dictionary, but wow... that last paragraph made it worth the read... what a story!!

Talk about throwing everything up in the air again. Anyone know how this will affect the situation for the teachers remaining?

Well with the demise of Griffith, the Oz mafia went bust. I wonder what happened to their hard disks?

Lang Sols is a real kneejerk outfit. It was lucky I got my walking papers from the Gulag when I did. I was real sore at the time but it turned out to be a good thing. I got my MA in California and met my new wife. Still on good terms with the ex Mrs so everything worked out in the end for me. I'm now back in the ME in a good job with way more than I ever got from QP.

Some of the other Gulagers didn't get so lucky and weren't able to find other jobs in Qatar. It's too bad. I feel for my old working pals.

All Quiet on the Gulag Front.
Lang Sols are running a tight ship. So you won't hear much from teachers. Same scare tactic as QU probably.
