Hi all,
Just got a job offer to teach in Abu Dhabi through teach away and want to know if its a good offer. I have a Masters in Ed. with 10 years teaching experience in my local public schools. ADEC is only recognizing 7 of those years because I was certified for the last 7 years. I also taught preservice teachers at my local University for 2 years, which is not recognized by ADEC. Anyway, I was offered $4200 and accommodations. Is that a good offer? I've never taught overseas and don't know much about the standard of living in Abu Dhabi. Please share your thoughts. I have to let them know soon.
Thanks |

Yes, for K-12 that is a good offer to start as long as accommodation isn't shared. |

Thanks Sheik n Bake Accommodations are not shared, I get a 1 bedroom... I just hope its spacious. I had thought the money was decent, not fabulous where I can save a ton. Are used cars cheap in Abu Dhabi or is it more cost effective to take a taxi? Is it safe for a woman there? |

There are lots (and lots) of single women living happily in Abu Dhabi and the rest of the Emirates (and the rest of the Gulf actually).
Taxis are pretty much a hassle because of the extreme heat for most of the year. Standing out in the sun for a half hour waiting for an empty taxi when it is 115 degrees F with 90% humidity gets old REAL fast.
I would lease a car for the first few months and see how you like your situation. If you think you will probably stay a few years, then I would buy... and unless you can buy used from a person that you know and trust, I would buy new. I always got a new bottom of the line Toyota/Honda/Nissan. They are cheap and easy to sell when you decide to leave.
If you are the outdoorsy type and think you might want to get into the popular sport of dune bashing, you would want to get a 4WD and learn about the joys of being stuck in the deep sand.
