If you want to make money teaching English in China ....

The best place to go is Shanghai. After class, dress up well, head in to town, and hope to catch the eye of a well-heeled Chinese woman in need of a toy-boy.

Do you have a savings target?

You probably could do that in some dusty and dirty countryside city as well, just need a bit more creativity.

the bigger the city, the more expensive the costs. often in the cities housing won't be provided.

CELTA is wonderful but doesn't really benefit much in china. so, simply grabbing a number out of the air...you can get 10,000 rmb/month in shanghai but maybe 2,000 in housing rent and that'll leave you with about 1,000 US$ after taxes.

stack that against a 40 hr work week back home and that 250 US$ per week comes in at about $6 per hour. which is below legal minimum wage inmost states.

Except that you would not be working 40 hours a week as an English teacher.

Maybe the terminology is misleading. Maybe like employees at Walmart are called Associate Members, maybe we should be called Associate English teachers. Laughing

sadly, a 15 hour a week gig in china can come close to a 40 hour stint due to scheduling ineptitude/office hours. the concept of "block hours" has yet to catch traction.
