I am a 48 yr old Native Speaker (American) with a JD, and three unrelated masters. 20 years experience as a corporate trainer and training director. I have taught a few general business courses for a local college and have done some volunteer ESL teaching for a local non-profit. I am willing to obtain a M.A. in Applied Lingustics (been looking at the distance learning program at UMass) and a CELTA. By the time, I complete the additional education I will be 52 years old. Are there opportunities for old timers in the ME?

Thank you

Dear overhere.

So you want to be "overthere" instead? Well, 52 isn't all that old. Add on another decade, and you'll be getting into "Old Territory."

I taught in Saudi until I was 60 (I'm 67 now), but I think you'd find the UAE more congenial. The problem is that they almost always want about three years of EFL experience in addition to the very good qualifications you'll have.

Regards,
John

Dear Kipling,

"Wow Mr J you look so much younger in the picture that goes with your post."

And your posts display a wisdom that belies the youthful demeanor of your avatar (hmm, will we ever be able to use that word again without conjuring up a mental image of giant smurfs?)

What's the secret? Well, in my case, it certainly can't be attributed to "clean living."

And just to remove any speculation regarding what NCTBA is alluding to - although we (NCTBA and I) have not had the pleasure of meeting "face-to-fact" we have met virtually, on SKYPE.

Regards,
John

Well... I have met him face to face... in real life in Santa Fe... him and his lovely wife. (and dogs and cats) Cool

As to the question from our OP... Mr/Ms Overhere. Your age shouldn't be an issue except as to working long enough to recoup the cost of adding another MA to your collection. I would think about whether you are qualified to go over there and teach business. Take a look at some of the university websites across the Gulf and check out the jobs available versus your experience and credentials.

Dear Kipling,

Much as I dislike destroying yet another illusion (for many of us, it's the illusions and myths that sustain us,) my previous avatar wasn't a photo of myself. I'm actually much younger (and better) looking.

John

Dear Pikgitina,

We were born in the same city nineteen and a half years apart. But actually, I've been told that I do resemble my namesake (though, of course, I look younger and more handsome. Very Happy)

Madman John

I concur... there is definitely a resemblance between the two of you. Enough of one that one wonders where exactly you were in 1962. Were you in Boston? Dating his mother?

Dear veiledsentiments,

I was in Boston. I was dating. Upon the advice of my lawyer, I refuse to say any more.
But Johnny boy has done well for himself, hasn't he? I'll bet his Papa's very proud of him.

Regards,
Proud John
