The first two were well run and worth going to. Standard of catering was very high ! Let's hope they keep it up.
I did scream a bit when they turned down my proposal for a presentation. Very wicked of them.

Uncle Scott, don't be upset, just put forward your proposal here, and I think it will be accepted by Dave's audience!
We are looking forward to your presentation. |

What did participants (and others) make of KSAALT Conference Mark III ?
The catering was disorganised and slow. That is my comment. |

I heard good things about it in general, but nothing specific. It's a little harsh to judge a whole conference on catering, scot47! |

The catering ruined it for me. 45 minutes to queue up for a plate of (admittedly up-scale) cafeteria food. Yes, I timed the wait (of a friend) and decided to skip the meal, opting for two pieces of cake from the desert table. The cake was exceptionally delicious, but not enough to make up for the lack of a real lunch.
The bookstore displays were horrible, nothing but a few textbooks, no App Ling or books of interest to the intellectual crowd of attendees.
The presentations I went to were OK, but overall I was not highly impressed. Compared to KOTESOL I went to in Busan several years ago, KSAALT seemed unfortunately low-key. The people from KSAALT that organized it seemed to try their best, but they were let down by the third parties (caterers and publishers).
Also PMU is in a forsaken piece of desert a million miles from anywhere with an extraordinary lack of signposts. |

So, you're saying that the desert table wasn't deserted?

Actually the dessert table was largely unoccupied, due to most participants being stuck in the line for their meat and two veg. I will blame my initial misspelling on the desert ambiance of PMU, as I bask in the green glory that is Jubail. |

I, for one, will desert KSAALT. I will seek my CPD elsewhere. Maybe in the Tylos Hotel in Bahrain. |

You're missing the whole point, illeanasky. You weren't meant to understand what he was saying. Rather, the idea was to sit there, nodding sagely, pretending to understand. Afterwards, in order to validate the guy's whole existence, you were meant to go up to him and say something like,
"I believe the true socio-linguistic purposes of the lexicographically-themed interactive discourse are best served by the subservience of the lexical and pedagogical corpus to the promulgation of the cerebral and cognitive endeavors of the facilitator of the learning-acquisition device, in order to establish his academic dominance within the hierarchical context of the group dynamic. ".
You'd better make sure that a load of people heard you, though, to get maximum benefit. And if he nodded sagely in response, then you'd know that you really were in the right place, and you could start preparing next year's presentation on the use of irony to enhance the lingo-receptivity of the learning experience.

You mean, Scot, miss out on the intellectual and academic endeavors of the conference, and its cognitive achievements, and instead succumb to the temptations of the corporeal activities and anti-intellectual discourse not untypical of the bacchanalian environs of the Tylos?
Good on ya. So would I. |
