I have been black listed in China. They say I am a trouble maker. This is the new buz word for anyone who asks to be paid the agreed salary. My last job cheated on everything. You weren't allowed bank print outs because you are a foreigner. So I have spent just about what I made trying to get redemption and still must leave the country.
A good trick in having the person sent home by the police because you don't want to pay them.

What did you do? You must have done something more than just demand your wages?

I know a guy who's bllacklisted with certain schools in Xi'an, but the whole country? nope... so I'm curious about this..

Well, at least you tried. I think there's nothing worse than being cheated and just walking away and allowing it to happen.

At least you gave them enough trouble that they felt it necessary to get you out of the country. Granted, being blacklisted is no bed of roses. Even if it is a country wide blacklist, though, it may likely not be permament.

Could you give some more detail, please?

Not quite sure how to say this, but I have been here 15 years, and have come across one or two 'troublemakers' Some made trouble with the school, and two in particular made trouble with the local PSB (one attacked a local Police Officer, following said teachers removal from a bar by the police for unruly behaviour).

I have heard of teachers being blacklisted by chain school and being 'barred' from working in a particular city.

I have never heard of any teacher blacklisted at provincial level, and certainly not at a national level. Even the guy who attacked the police officer was able to legally secure another teaching job in the neighbouring province, even though at one point he was very close to being deported.

So, I'm sorry, but being blacklisted throughout China for making a fuss about your salary, or being cheated by the school (which I have no doubt happens - I know this from personal experience) just doesn't ring true. Either the OP has misunderstood, or something serious is not being told here.

And as for being denied bank printouts - I get them regularly from three different banks - again - never heard of anything like this. Hell, you can even get them from an ATM!

I'm with Mike here. Something smells with this one. More details before I comment or read further.

More than likely you're just on a list circulated among recruiters. If your resume appears on a few websites frequented by the same recruiters, change websites. Change the way in which you find jobs so that different recruiters look at your resume. I thought that I was blacklisted for awhile until I just changed recruiters.

I worked with one butch dyke with bogus credentials and a psychopath with a known criminal record. Both slept with their students. It was well-known. Nothing happened to those reprobates.

It's unlikely that you are blacklisted by the SAFEA or the Ministry of Education. Those people couldn't find their butts with both hands.

I've just deleted an insulting posting.

If you can't discuss things here civilly, you will be gone.

Actually I started a new job and went in and out of the country. The problem said by my new employer is that they can't get a permit because I caused trouble. I got a good reference on this job but was upset because they wanted at one time to pay me three months late. This was the policy for all the teachers. The reason given was that we might run away. So I took my contract to the FAO and pointed out that we were to be paid monthly. The big problem was at the end of the contract they didn't include my overtime. I went to the labor board and presented everything in Chinese to them. They just picked up their newspapers and ignored me. When I got back to my school I saw other teachers who were being sent home by the police. I went to the PSB and they wouldn't give me a travelling visa because the school would not give them a letter. Actually they said to come in a month when the visa was near expiration and there would be no problem. When the month was up, I went and was denied the visa. I went to Hong Kong twice and came back in and got all the materials OKedby the PSB and they kept my passport for a month. Last Monday my boss said I needed to buy a ticket out of the country and then they would pay me my salary.
Like another poster said being a trouble maker means asking to be paid regularly and signing forms saying you were paid.
I complained to the recruiter and said my salary was rolled back. They said they liked my work and increased the pay 500 rmb. Then after two months it was back down again. The recruiter told me that she was under the impression I was making 2000 rmb less. So they tricked her also. I went the PSB to check out their copy of my contract and found it was 200 rmb less than the original contract. The second contract disappeared from my house. My wife said everything would be OK, they wanted me to stay there many years.
MOD EDIT ANyway I am continuing to try and stay here. It is not the money it is the cheating. The school also employed people to teach on student visas. It is a school with most of the students coming from parents of government jobs.

Mat,

Let things cool down for awhile. Finish your contract, then move on. In the meantime, start looking for a new job.

It just seems like you're blacklisted countrywide. Network your way out of your situation. You won't be able to win in your situation. You're not on your own turf, and you don't hold all of the cards.

So are we agreeing that a complete China ban is possible?

At first you said that it is probably just a recruiter blacklist.

I would be amazed if it was possible to be banned from a country as large as China based on one bad job situation. The vast majority of people (if not everyone) has had some kind of bad work experience at some point in their lives.

I have heard of a few cases where foreigners have been deported from China. One was for drugs, another for over-staying his visa, in which case he spent 2 months in jail here and was then deported. 2 years later he returned. Another case was a guy that assaulted a police officer (well, gate keeper, actually) a new employer couldn't process his work permit because of it.
As far as I know, you can be blacklisted for serious breaches of the law. However, breaches of contract, fines imposed by breaches of contract are not serious enough. As was posted on another thread, there are only 4 people listed on the SAFEA website. which doesn't really mean anything, they are mearly guidlines, aferterall.
It seems like there must be more to your story, OP. My advice is stay within the law, and make sure your visa is up to date. Don't leave your passport in someone's hands with promises of a months waiting, especially if it is soon to expire! it just doesn't take that long.
best of luck to you anyway, i hope it works out for you.

Matt - looking through your posts it seem you're an old China hand - and married to a Chinese national. If your situation is now so uncertain it serves as a good reminder to us others that a so-called permanent life in China seems to be a rather fragile concept.

There's no such thing as an "Old China hand" and anyone claiming to be, isn't. Everything and anything can change from day-to-day, region-to-region, city-to-city.

If you're legal, by the stated rules on various websites (degree, two year's experience teaching) you should expect no major problems.

If you leave one job with a reference letter (it need not be glorifying...just complete {start date, end date}) you can obtain employment legally elsewhere.

I don't know how all these other people seem to be having so many problems. I read all these posts about people being scr*wed over and it seems that they set themselves up for it.

Or, maybe, it's just me.
