Hello,

I am new here. I am hoping you all can give me some guidance. Here is my situation. I have a BS in Computer Networking. I have no teaching experience aside from homeschooling my kids on and off. I hold no certificates.

I want to teach English in the Middle East. What steps should I follow to do that? Should I get the TESOL or another certificate online? Should I go for my Master's in Education? Should I teach in a private school without credentials to get expereince?

please hep..thanks

No credential = no job - anywhere.

Do a search on the international schools etc. their required qualifications and experience are quite explicit and they do not deviate from them because they don't have to.

Employers do not accept online TESOL certificates. For the Middle East, the preferred cert is the CELTA.

To teach in the better international schools (decent pay and working conditions), you need a legitimate teaching cert/license from your home country.

There is very little available to someone with no credentials or experience.

Thanks for the replies...

I think, based on your thoughts, that I should go ahead and get my Master's in Childhood Education. My only problem is that once I get that in about two years time; I would then need to wait another one or two years to gain experience. Is that true? Can I just use the experience I gained full-time teaching for two semesters, during my Master's program, as experience or is that not enough?

thanks

In tertiary, most require a Master's plus min 3 years post grad. Can't speak to international school requirements - check their websites?

This is a maybe. At the top university jobs, they usually do not count it... unless they are desperate for teachers Laughing... or if your prior experience is particularly appropriate for the program that you are going into. Another example is that their Ministry may set the rules. For instance, when I first went to Oman, SQU required an MA+1 year, whereas a technical college in Oman was required to only hire MA+2 years. No one seemed to know why, and it was set in concrete. Later the Ministry changed the rules as they were having problems getting enough teachers.

In other words, it may get your foot in the door, but it wouldn't be counted as post MA experience if their pay scale is based on degree+exp. But, I think the MA would be a good investment and then you would need to start your search school by school to learn their requirements. I would hope that this MA would also provide you with the legal certification/license that the best schools require.

Getting the TESOL would do you no harm and often many jobs can come up through this.Once you are in the network here people can then recommend you.You can work part time in a language school or in some institutes and experience the local culture. Here many doors are opened once you get to know people and this is one way to do it.
