|
|
Pardon my ignorance: I have been offered a position in UAE with 48 days' leave a year. How many weeks holiday would this equate to? I mean are there five or six working days in the week.
Many thanks |

That would depend on where you are working. Some people work a 5-day work week, and some people work 6 days a week. |

I don't know if it is the same in the UAE, but in Oman 48 days would be 48 days. Your weekend days are counted as part of the 48, not in addition to the 48. |

I agree... every contract that I ever had... if it said 48 or 55 or 60 days... it was calendar days. I never had a contract that gave the summer leave as X number of work days.
So, I'd say that this is between 6-7 weeks - seems a rather odd number of days.

Yes, I can confirm that most leave days in contracts are stipulated as 'calendar' days, meaning that the weekends in between are counted as part of the leave days. |

This is not always the case. I've got 48 days' annual leave and they are not calendar days. In other words, it comes to about nine and a half weeks. |

^ Me too.
If you have been given 48 days then my guess is that it is working days.
I also have 48 days a year.
I'm required to work two Saturday mornings a year and get 2 days off in lieu for it.
This gives me 50 days - ie 10 weeks, working days being Sunday to Thursday inclusive - 5 days per week.
This is a question you should be asking your prospective employer to be sure, of course. |

Be careful
Contracts in a lot of universities and colleges are changing their holiday allocations from working days to calendar days. You need to check carefully especially new contracts.

Interestingly, I worked at 4 different universities in the Gulf and all four used calendar days when I was there. Your comment suggests that many of changed at some time to working days... and now may be changing back?
Obviously only your employer has the answer these days.

I would check with the employer as well, and look for the specific words "calendar days" in your contract. Then have a look at the UAE labour law for information regarding the definition of leave/calendar days. |

Yes, some places have changed from calendar days to working days. My employer did this a few years ago. |

The HCT changed to working days some years ago. My contract renewal letter for the coming academic year states 'work days' so no change. |

48 days - sounds like HCT - so that's 9 weeks and 3 days - usually made up to 10 weeks by proctoring for the CEPA exam - take 2 wees for the midyear break, leaves you with 8 weeks in the summer. |
