|
|
Hello, I'm curious if anyone with experience teaching at a high school can answer this question. I've been applying to numerous university positions in Beijing lately, but they all seem to offer only 4,000-6,000 RMB a month for 16-18 teaching hours per week.
I'm trying to find 7,000-9,000 a month for this schedule. Does anyone have any advice on finding better paying jobs teaching high school students, that have the same benefits as the university positions? |

i worked at a high school in 2004-05. it was my second job in china after one term at a college. both of those jobs had similar schedules (16 hrs/week) and similar salaries (lower than your 7000-9000 range). i can't think of a reason why a high school would pay more for the same amount and type of work, but if someone else can come up with something, please fill me in.
if you want more money than these universities offer, chances are you'll have to work for a private language school, which also means more work. or else take the lower paying job and do some easy part time work on the side. but you may get lucky and find exactly what you're looking for. |

Most colleges have housing included. Most high schools don't. |

could be a possibility and i dont doubt you. but the high school i worked at had teacher's apartments right at the school in the city centre. perhaps it was an exception and maybe that's why it never occurred to me. |

I have worked for 2 different high schools, and both have included a free apartment and utilities.
Both schools paid 9,000 RMB a month for 10 months.
Maybe high schools pay more because the jobs are less desirable ?
It seems as though everyone prefers to work at a university. |

Were these schools in Beijing? |

High school classes often have twice as many students, and their behavior is more boisterous. It's like herding cats. That's why the salaries are higher. |

Foreign language high schools (外国语学校)pay more. I worked at one where the pay started at 9,000/month x 12 months + on-campus apartment with all utilities, cable, and internet included. FL schools are not the same as international schools. They're very competitive high schools for the best & brightest Chinese students, and they have excellent reputations. The school I was at, for instance, was able to recommend the top 10% of each class directly to BeiDa/Tsinghua.
These schools are willing to pay more because (a) they get quite a bit more money from the government and (b) they expect results. They are demanding jobs (16 hours a week + office hours), but rewarding since the majority of the students are so excellent. |

I was offered to work in Shanghai starting in September 2008.
The job was going to pay 16,000 RMB per month and provide me with a nice free furnished apartment on campus. That was for 10 months. I would have had 2 months off, basically July and August if I recall, and given a bonus equivalent to 2 months' salary.
It was a government key school (at the middle school and high school level) and had an international division. I would have been teaching some, or all, IB.
I'm sorry but I can't recall how many classes I was supposed to teach each week.
I also passed on the job to go work in Korea, so I can't tell you how the job turned out. |

Could you please send me a private message with the info on that school? Thanks! |

Sounds like it may have required proper teaching certification from the western world? |

Nope- I was offered a job at the same one last spring (same salary too). I ended up working in a university joint venture instead. I only have CELTA/BA/8 years experience. |
