I just applied to a program on the Burmese border. I'm trying to get to Mae Sot or Chiang Mai to teach Burmese refugees living there. Ideally I will be going before the end of the summer, but we'll see.
As I'm still in the early stages of planning, I was wondering if anyone could give me their read on the political situation in Thailand at the moment? It would be a huge help to me.
Reports here are spotty and only give the most general account of how things are. Is there unrest outside of the capital? Do any westerners feel uncomfortable there? Any advice at all?
I have also been hearing more about the Burmese situation recently - especially that things have been heating up between the SPDC and the Mon in the north. Does anyone have any inklings on how that's playing out?
I very much want to be there... it's just the getting there that I want to get down. Once I'm there, I'll have some Burmese friends who will know me.
Thanks so much for reading this post!! |
