The short answer to your question is an emphatic YES!
Basically, 60 years ago, these people were living in tents, riding camels, getting their water from wells etc.
THEN came the black stuff underneath the ground, in came the cash and with it came luxuries thick and fast. The eldest generation around today have lived though the hard times. Their children became spoilt (is it not human nature to give your kids what you never had?). Their grandchildren are spolit on some next level!!
Not meaning to sound patronising, of course (would I?! Me...?! ), but just to things into perspective. All in all, they have not managed to cope with sudden and immense increase in wealth - and it seems as though they are paying the price.
That said, you will see two extremes, pencil thin people who would find a lycra/spandex rather baggy and huge obese people. The danger out here is that you can easily put on a couple of stones and not really look out of place...now THAT'S food for thought!! |

The new generations are all about "Me, I want, I buy, I get." These kids are among the richest in the world and they know it. Qatari kids who are in the lower income bracket (and believe me there are plenty of those, we had a lot at the Gulag, that's why they were there - trying to get a good job to earn a decent living, they're not all rich) suffer because of these show offs. They buy a cell phone every month and throw out the old ones because they aren't the latest model. If you don't have a Blackberry, you just don't make the grade according to many of these kids.

You can say that again. It's the 'me, me, me generation. Probably going to be the same in China, maybe worse because they are all little emperors. |
