how long do i need to wait for this to be processed? my school has had my passport since february 18th and they simply keep putting me off. i have also asked them for a multiple entry permit as i may decide to holiday out of china at some point. are these permits part and parcel of the Z visa, or are they an extra? (the school administrator claims to know nothing of multi-entry permits).

two of our teachers fled the college this past week as none of their administrative needs were being met, including a contract offer/signing. is this an anomaly or is it typical behaviour of a college/university? i do enjoy working here, but administration is not their strong suit....

That is almost 2 months--very long...Mine were done in more like 2 weeks...But it wouldn't be the first time a place dragged their feet.

As for the multiple entry we were told we could pay ourselves if we wanted it---about 700 Y but I think this varies by province...If you want a trip you can get a single re-entry without too much fuss.

I have been teaching at my school for almost 3 months. They have yet to provide a z visa and doubt they can even get one. How long should this take? They have produced a temp resident paper and have my red expert book. Do I need something in my passport? I have signed no contract with them however did sign something that wasn't for my school. What exactly do I need. I also feel I should start asking for my plane ticket money in monthly installments. The school has been less than honest with me on many things and I am starting to worry.
I could use some advice here, thank you.

There is no reason for it to take 2 months to get your visa. They may not be able to and are stalling you to save face. I would be in there everyday asking when,when,when? Do they have your passport? Tell them it is your govt.'s property and they need to return it a.s.a.p. The longer you let them slide the longer they will.

MOLIHUA...You can ask for your plane money in monthly installments. In fact, it's a good idea. But since you didn't
do it at the get go you probably won't have much luck. I'd just be honest with them and say you have your doubts as to whether you will really get it based on what youv'e encountered thus far. If nothing else it may improve your overall conditions. It could also possibly worsen them and then you walk.

As long as the FT's are willing to settle for less the admin will be happy to do less. Sometimes it just takes being firm and letting them know your expectations. (within reason)

Either the PSB has an undying vendetta against you, or your boss is being crooked.

Really. DO I get a prize?
My old school was new, so couldn't issue a Z ivsa. I finally got the books, but still had only an F visa in my passport. I left after six months. And came up north. Then my old school broke up. Problems with the CHinese partner. Made problems transfering my Z visa up here.
Got it though.
Only prob now is that it ws issued in March 2004 and expires in MArch 2003/. Go tfigure. Guess tht's CHina. Hope it doesn't cause probs when I leave .

The question is: havew they had FT's before you arrived? If not - then they are new at this game!
Even if they employed foreign teachers before, the FAO may be a new face and be totally inexperienced.
Anyway, two months - how long is your current visa valid?
I would start claiming my passport back! You must never allow anyone to keep it for weeks on end! That's palying with fire. What if they lose it?
Besides, if your current visa expires, someone will have to foot the overstaying charge: 500 a day. Normally, the school pays - but only if you can prove it was their wrong (contract!).

I went with the person in-charge in processing such to the PSB (or whatever). When we arrived there, we submitted the needed documents and we were told to go back after 3 hours, and gotcha! we got it.

But, the school won't give me the red book (Foreign Expert's Certificate). They want me to keep only my passport and residence permit.

my foreign expert book just showed up in my hands yesterday. i'm assured my Z visa will be ready on friday. i agree that my passport should be in my hands, and it can be, it's sitting in someone's office at the college. i simply left it with them to get the visa, and it slipped my mind they still had it. i'm going to get it in one hour as it doesn't belong to them and of course, its better i hold onto it.

there have been foreigners here before, but perhaps they never asked for the Z visa.... i don't know. these guys are slow to get things done sometimes.

If you have a Foreign Experts Card then you should carry it with your other documents. In effect it is a work permit. At the back there are also the pages to allow you to change so much of your well-earned RMB back into dollars, sterling or whatever.

For those of you without your passports, I hope you are carrying a photocopy around with you in lieu.
