So I am under contract until the end of June in this god forsaken hell hole otherwise known as Northeastern China, after that I am gunning directly for Taiwan.

I think Taichung seems like the most livable place to work, study, and save some money so that is my number 1 plan right now.

I have a few years experience in Japan and China and am curious if I should line up work beforehand or not. All the job postings right now are generally for immediate work so should I wait to apply or start applying ASAP and just explain my situation?

Is July a brutal time to find work?

Plenty of threads on this, but I think you might need to turn up and see how it goes. Most jobs are advertised at the start of the year but you can still find them later on in the year. As you already pointed out, the majority of schools want you to be able to start ASAP, so being here is a big bonus. Be prepared to do a little running around though. Good luck.

If you have enough money to live for a few months after you arrive in Taiwan, then look for work after you arrive. You will most likely find better quality work that way. If you don't have the funds - then set something up before you arrive.

I never lived in Taichung, but I think it's a good choice.

What's the problem with your present location?

In regards to living in Taiwan for a few months whilst looking for work, what would be an appropriate sum? How does 85,000 NTD sound? How long could I expect that to last me, if I try to be somewhat frugal?

Secondly, what sort of accommodation should I seek out during the hunt for work? Are there cheap places to stay?

$NT 85K should do you well.
At current exchange rates that's around $2700 US more than enough to get yourself set up i.m.h.o.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm glad to hear that it'll be enough cash. In regards to the second part though... Are there cheap hotels/hostels and whatnot, or should I just pick my location and find an apartment right away? That doesn't seem like a very good idea, as whatever school I wind up at might not be conveniently located in relation to the apt.
