Don't know if you're married but even with 18k, you'd need to spend at least half your monthly salary to find a semi-decent place to stay (NOT a compound, where accommodations go for 30k and above).

1 + 1 = 11 going on in here.

You claim that with an 18,000 allowance, he would need to spend AT LEAST half his monthly salary to get a SEMI-decent place to stay, and it still wouldn't get him a place in a compound because in compounds the cheapest places are for 30,000. Let's see what your assertion gives us:

Yes, all right, I got ahead of myself there a bit. Jeez, take it easy.

SAR 18k would yield this gentleman SAR 1,500 monthly for which one can't get anything agreeable except a dinky place in a dodgy, rundown area. A solid-sized apartment in a decent neighborhood is minimum 2,500 per month and that's not necessarily fully furnished. Plus transportation, which - whether a taxi, driver, rental or leased/bought - would take an even bigger chunk out of the salary than the accommodation top-up required. If he's lucky, he'd be left with barely US$ 1,000 net.

You can get that in Thailand so why come to SAUDI!!?

If that is the case, they're getting short-changed, too, because even in Bahrain a Subcontinental or Filipino teacher will get [b]etter terms than those described... - and that's without the oppressive Saudi environment.

Again, I don't know what planet/country you are talking about. Over the years, I have been offered science/math teacher posts in many many school in Jeddah. This includes Saudi private schools and international schools. In Saudi private schools, the salaries have ranged from 5,000 to 7,000. In Lebanese-run international schools, 4,500 to 6,000, and in Paki/Indian-run international schools 3,500 to 5,000. [...]

Well, if that is true, it is outrageous. As I said previously, I was offered that kind of salary to teach the Simple Present three hours per day in some poxy language school in Riyadh.

In Bahrain, I know for a fact that an elementary or highschool teacher can get a better package than that described, and that's without having a "pristine" complexion and blue eyes and all that.

There is a racial divide. Lots of teachers in KSA are working for 4000 SR a month and less. That is also the sort of salary on offer to local hires, often the wives of people here on legit contracts.

The entire teaching staff of some "International" schools consist of wives recruited locally.

The package that we can offer at the moment, is as follows:

1) Monthly salary: SR 7,500
2) Annual housing allowance: SR 18,000 (for a couple with/without children); Half the allowance for a single person
3) Health insurance for you and your family who are under your sponsorship in the kingdom.
4) Flight tickets for your wife and you, as well as two child tickets.

Let us know your thoughts.

Many regards

This is amazing. I was offered an almost identical package by Manarat al-Riyadh in 1991. Twenty years and no increment. I was working at one of the Saudi universities when King Abdullah took over; everyone got two months salary and a 15% wage increase - everyone who was Saudi, that is. At that time colleagues told me that they had not had a pay rise in 30 years. Public and private sectors are similarly fossilized.

Al-Rowad is similar to Manarat. They have an Arabic medium campus and an "International" school, that is English medium. Students are mixed nationalities, but mostly Arab expats and Saudis.

For the best jobs, look at the real "International Schools" - the American School, the British School, and the Multinational School. They all have websites and are often recruiting. These schools serve the expat community although they usually include a fair contingent of local (Saudi and Arab expat) students. The students are not so much a problem as the administration, which is often inept in the more commercial schools. The expat schools were set up with a different "mission" and often have better working conditions and better remuneration packages.
