I just got a call from a job I applied for through Dallah (AL Barakah Group) and they are working out the details of the pay and benefits. I have 11 years experience teaching ESL in the USA (Texas). I have a Masters in Education Administration and a Bachelors in Comunications, but no DELTA, CELTA, TEFL certificates, etc... I have one year experience in the UAE.

I would be teaching ESL for Civil Avaitors. How much pay can I expect? What else should I expect? What should I be aware of? Can anyone help me please!?

You're speaking to a very small group of posters here, csanaya. I have the experience to teach Aviation English, but outside the military programs (read: BAe Systems) who have their own pay structure, I wuz unaware that they even hired us folk anymore.

Good luck with rational, informed advice...

CELTA and TEFL certificates are entry level qualifications that almost anyone can get after a month of full time work. The DELTA is more substantial. The Preparatory Year Program at King Saud University, (Bell/Obeikan) are putting all their teachers through the DELTA themselves. This is probably to increase their own credibility and to make up for their hiring of BAs instead of MAs.

This could be because they were not offering very high salaries, or it may be because they needed such a large number of teachers that they wanted to be sure they got them. In any case, it is not usual to demand DELTA.

For hiring purposes, an MA ordinarily supersedes EFL qualifications and it seems to matter little what the MA is in, although some adverts do state "MA in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a related field". Employers often just want to say that all teachers are MA holders. Public universities typically require MAs too, though you'll always be at the bottom of the heap with an MA there.

A BA in Communications is a definite selling point and you should push this. Specialize in something - it applies to all "skill sets" - and market yourself as an expert in that. Don't say, "one year experience" BUT rather "previous experience in the region". If you know any Arabic, say so.

And don't forget to research you prospective employer thoroughly. Tell them you'd like to visit their school / univesity - at your expense - and see if they'll spring for a visitors visa. If they won't, when ask them why.

Ahem...M. Ed. in TESOL. However, the DELTA is nothing EVER to sniff at.

What is wrong with a DELTA?

If this is directed to me, then possibly, I wuz unclear...

There haint NOTHING wrong with the DELTA! It probably gives you the BEST intensive, practical experience possible.

My M.Ed. didn't involve a practicum (but I DID work full time whilst pursuing it) but relies heavily on the theory of language learning...how to deduce language learning barriers and then, plan a strategy to overcome them.

Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages...however, as satisfied as I am with my M. Ed., I doff my hat to the DELTA holders...

Dear csanaya,

Nothing - NCTBA's expression is one of praise.

Regards,

Well they seem to be considering me with my Masters in Education Administration and Bachelors in Commnications and 12 years ESL experience. What would you think is a fair offer?

I cannot see a lateral move as a great move because I live in the UAE which is more liberal.
