Late - yes, usually for good reasons of little concern
Early - YES too ! Because it was a weekend, got paid a day in advance.
Even got paid once before the winter holiday started as heading abroad, so that pay was well well in advance, but it stank since the next payday wasn't until the end of January which was a long wait.
Anyone got paid early ? |
It is standard practice in Japan to pay you the Friday before payday if payday falls on a weekend or even a Monday public holiday. Any company that doesn't do this is mistreating its employees in a minor way. All my employers (I work 4 different part time jobs) and all the companies my husband has worked for pay the Friday before the weekend if payday falls on that weekend. |

This has been my experience at my past 3 jobs (Nova and 2 small schools). My new gig told me at the contract signing that he would pay me the following Monday in that situation.
On a personal level, I am careful with my money and I'm never broke on payday. But it did worry me a bit. |

Yes, at British Cultural Academy in Kawaguchi, Saitama.
I don't advise working there. |
Haha, I know two people who interviewed for this exact job. It had way more problems than that. |
It sure as hell did. Terrible, terrible place to work.
After being paid late (part was paid on time, but they "forgot" to pay me for all days worked during the month...) and being forced to wait over a long holiday and then having to demand my money instead of waiting until the NEXT payday like they were demanding that I do, I split when I finally got all my money on the next payday. I was not the only teacher to pull a runner on them (most teachers are part-time there; only a day or a few days a week). Go to the Korea forums and read the horror stories that go on over there. That is pretty much what working at B.C.A. in Kawaguchi was like. |

As a few people have pointed out, some non-English related companies have paid their people late, but only in a few cases. It seems against the trend.
Why is it that so many English teaching companies in Japan are so poorly managed? Does this industry attract people who think they can just scam their way into money? I think the English industry here is pretty tough, and I bet the profit margins are pretty low. Wonder why they get into it?
Nova even without the scams was proly going to crash anyways, as it was massively over sized and was in locations with little interest in learning English. |
