If i have been in vietnam for six months or more at the time of applying for a work permit, is a police report from the local Vietnamese police acceptable? Also, is possible or not to have documents notarized and authenticated in Vietnam. Thanks in advance everyone.

If you have been in Nam for more than 6 months you only need a police check from the city that you live in Vietnam. In HCM its on Pasteur (The department of Justice). You will need to fill out a form in Vietnamese, have the residence book that your landlord has to get showing where you live, a notarized copy of your passport. Takes about a month to get after you submit it. Best to have someone from the school you work at go with you. Have fun!

Thanks for the information. Can I also have the passport notarized in Ho Chi Minh City? I guess I should also asked if it possible to have other relevant documents notarized there as well. I will have my college diploma notarized and authenticated here in America, but since I will be earning the CELTA in HCMC it seems logical that it can be done there.

Passport copy can be notarized by any viet notary. You do not need to submit the CELTA cert for a work permit. Your college degree will need to be translated into Vietnamese and also notarized for WP

I think he left the part out that this VN police check IS to accompany the US police check (or other country) that is notarized by your US local police, then apostatized by the state, then sent to the Federal Govt., then sent to VN embassy or consolate in the USA for translation and their stamp, and then legalized here in VN.

But I'm not sure that ALL of that is still required, that's what I had to go through some years back.

Sad

Excuse me but I have no CELTA, TEFL and do have a WP. I just got it. Did not need to turn in anything other than the apostillized BS diploma, local police check, med check, CV form and the schools stuff. Also my passport copy was notarized by a Viet notary. I would add that the current government regulations on WP require a Bachelors degree or 5 years experience in the area you are going to work. Further I am tired of certain posters here making things personal i.e. "clueless" so I like other former contributers will post no more. Chao

But are you an english teacher? I'm a Business lecturer, therefore i also have no need for a notarized tefl cert. But i think you'll find most reputable schools will ask for a notarized cert. for example; VUS who are the biggest language centre in HCMC, request the following documents; (taken from their website)

I.DOCUMENTS
Please obtain the documents in the order listed:
1. Criminal background in Vietnam (if a foreign teacher has resided in Vietnam for over 6 months)
2. Notarized undergraduate degree
3. Notarized criminal background
4.Notarized TESOL certificate or equivalent
5.Medical check up certificate
6. Four passport sized color photos

Hope this helps.

Future "clueless" type comments will result in immediate permanent bans to include IPs.

If you can't or won't discuss things in a civil manner here, please go elsewhere before the decision is made for you.

I have heard from numerous sources that if you majored in education you do not need to present anything other than your 4 year degree. Otherwise you will be asked for a teaching certifcate along with the 4 year degree. I did not have to present one (BAEd), but other teachers at the school did.

Your CELTA needs to be notarized. The HR department specifically told me that if it wasn't my work permit would not go through.
