Dear all,

I have been offered two admission letters.

The first is from the British University in Dubai : Master of Education specializing in English language teaching.

The second is from the American University in Sharjah : MA in TESOL.

Are they the same? What is the difference? Which is better? I am so confused which programme I might join. Please I would be grateful if you advise.

Regards

If you are American, I would take AUS.

If you are British, do the other.

Or do whichever is cheapest. Laughing I suspect that employers would consider them equal.

Nature of the question and syntax suggest to me the poster is Arab or possibly from the subcontinent? Come on, VS, you suspect that too. Or from somewhere not mentioned? Let's lay odds, whaddaya say.

Take it easy, man. It seems that Arabs are giving you hard time. Whatever, Although I am Turkish, "The nature of your reply and the syntax" are extremely useless and imply that u are a racist. Sorry for that. Plz try to change your attitude against Arabs or at least pretend that u don't hate them if you are living on their land.

Dear Shish kebab,

I think you're being way too hard on the Sheik. He was simply making an supposition, based on your post, as to your country of origin.

To call that "racism" is a very large leap, one that, in my opinion, devalues the pejorative meaning of the word. Maybe you should save that term for REAL racists; Lord knows there are (unfortunately) enough of them around.

Regards,
John

S N B:
I concur with Sheshkebab's concern about your 'racist' comments. I note with deep concern your use of words like "number crunching Little Indians" in a another thread. You also proudly commented...."Filipina girl-friend and bacons". Obviously, you will agree this is not being respectful to your hosts. Perhaps Johnslat might want to defend you here as well?

I'll defend SnB by God. He knows of what he speaks. Who are you, nothing of more than 3 posts? A management goon?

NCTBA: Not much wisdom in defending any human ( not even S n B or myself) by God in this forum. Three (3) posts you can see perhaps. Not management goon by any chance, just a fellow Tefler who didn't get the 2% 'merit' yet believes a little civility is appropriate in this or any forum.....public or private.

As a female whose first career was in accounting, I wouldn't have been the least insulted at the phrase, "number-crunching little American" nor would I have been offended if he referred to his "American girl-friend and bacon."

I'm wondering if some people have terribly thin skin and just look for reasons to be insulted. Are Indians and Filipinos ashamed of their nationality and if anyone refers to it, they are insulted? All accountants of all nationalities are used to being called "number-crunchers" and "bean counters" and we use the terms ourselves. The same with those of us who have been known to date a male person have been called a "girlfriend." I'm not ashamed of any of those terms, nor of my nationality. I don't believe that most Indians or Filipinos are either.

As to the comment which started this... I believe that SnB was trying to point out to me that the OP was perhaps neither American nor British. So, was I the one being racist because I assumed that this person was one or the other and not a third option?

Did all of you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? sheesh...

Dear mamasboy,

"Perhaps Johnslat might want to defend you here as well?"

Actually, I would.

So, this is a "racist statement?"

Finish this sentence: I like teaching in the UAE because . . . ."

"I can have a Filipina girlfriend and a bacon sandwich."

Anyone who thinks that's racist (and I don't care what nationality, race, creed, etc. that person might be) likely sees ogres in the closet at night, too.

Think about it - would a racist even WANT a Filipina girlfriend (I'll pass on the bacon sandwich?)

As many of you know, the Sheikh used to be married to a Chinese lady. So, I suppose that must be yet another proof of his "racism," right?

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat: Line of defense sound familiar. However note the following:
- That you live and work in Gulf Region doesn't mean you're Pro-Arabs!
- That Osama worked with Reagan to rid Russians from Afghanistan did not mean he was Pro-America!
Surely, Son-of-Sam had girl-friends at some stage of his life too!
Catch my drift? So, that Sheikh WAS married to a Chinese, and perhaps half a dozen "Little Indians" makes him a non-racist?
WRONG!!

Dear mamasboy,

Ah, I see - so if you're NOT married to a person of another race, color, nationality, etc. that could mean you're a racist.

But if you ARE married to a person . . . then that means you could be a racist, as well.

Your comparisons are pretty bad: marriage, the intimate relationship between (usually) a man and a woman is hardly comparable to how one might feel about Arabs while living and working in the Gulf, or the alliance between the CIA (do you really think Reagan had even the slightest notion of Osama's existence) and Osama.

And as for the Son of Sam (wow - really over the top, here)

"One thing that stemmed from this was not being able to communicate with girls. He never had a girlfriend; he never even had contact with girls. Before he went into the army, he stated he hated girls and wanted nothing to do with them. This is what psychologists believe was the reason most of David's victims were women.(Apshce 1993, 151)"

But this is useless - if it gives you a satisfying sense of righteous outrage and moral superiority to label the Sheik a "racist," have fun with it.

I imagine the Sheik will survive your sanctimonious opprobrium.

Regards,
John

WOW... I've seen some weak supports for an opinion, but... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I think this is a perfect example of the phrase "grasping for straws."
