I have just arrived in Colombia and am interested in finding some part time work as an English tutor after I have improved my Spanish substantially. I am a retired biolgist and have completed a TEFL course. Does anyone have any ideas on the possibility of finding work? I would prefer to tutor business people rather Any comments will be much appreciated.

Hi,
Presently in Bogota but prefer a smaller city, although the best chances are probably here. Besides it rains here as much as it does in Vancouver, BC and I would appreciate seeing the sun once in a while.

if you only want to tutor, i'd recommend making friends and getting the word out so you could get some privates. newspaper ads or flyers might be effective too. as for a better climed city, the nicer the place, the stiffer the competition, but there are many beautiful places here. good luck.

Thanks, sounds like good advie MNguy. I have met some locals and may ask them to spread the word. Bogota does have some advantages, like one of the only two chiropractors in Colombia, so may I should stay a while. Do you teach or tutor here?

try cali maybe...sunny, nice people, and it's not as big as bogota.

how much smaller of a city are you looking for? beware: anything under about 400,000 starts to feel like a little town, and there's a colombian saying that goes "little town, big hell."

Hi Again,

I've been to Cali and once knew people there but have read elsewhere that there is a lot of competition. I presume that the smaller the city the less need for teachers or tutors. I have thought about places like Bucaramanga, Santa Marta and Popayan. I have been to Villvecencio, and like Los LLanos, but can't see much opportunity there, and haven't seen anyone writing about it. I was introduced to someone from an indegenous village a couple of hours from Leticia that is complentating getting into eco-tourism and possibly wants someone to teach english. In any case I really appreciate the responses I have been getting. Thanks.

I teach at an institute in a small town, about an hour outside of Bogota, and I love it. Tunja is about 160,000 people, but 1/5 people living here are here for University.
